His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and His Excellency Anura Kumara Disanayaka, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, today witnessed the exchange of seven Memoranda of Understanding between the Maldives and Sri Lanka at a ceremony held at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, reflecting the continued commitment of both countries to broadening cooperation across a range of mutually important sectors.
The agreements exchanged during the ceremony are aimed at further strengthening the longstanding friendship and close bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries. The MoUs cover key areas of cooperation including youth development, archiving and records management, tourism, the prevention of violent extremism, academic collaboration in the defence and health sectors, and the training and professional development of school teachers. Together, these areas represent an important foundation for enhancing institutional ties, building capacity, and promoting knowledge-sharing between the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
The exchange of these agreements highlights the growing scope of Maldives–Sri Lanka relations and the shared interest of both governments in advancing practical partnerships that support national development priorities. The inclusion of diverse sectors such as education, health, defence studies, and youth engagement demonstrates a forward-looking approach to cooperation, centred on strengthening human capital, promoting stability, and creating greater opportunities for both countries through sustained collaboration.
Particularly notable is the inclusion of tourism cooperation, which holds strong potential for increased partnership between the two Indian Ocean nations. As destinations known for their hospitality, natural beauty, and strategic importance in regional travel and connectivity, the Maldives and Sri Lanka are well placed to explore synergies that can enrich visitor experiences, encourage closer industry engagement, and support the continued growth and resilience of the tourism sector. Enhanced cooperation in tourism also reflects the wider value of regional partnerships in promoting sustainable economic progress and people-to-people exchange.
The agreements relating to teacher training and professional development, as well as academic cooperation in the defence and health sectors, further underline the shared emphasis both countries place on institutional excellence and long-term capacity building. These areas of cooperation are expected to create meaningful opportunities for professional exchange, technical learning, and the sharing of best practices, contributing to stronger public service delivery and deeper professional networks between the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
The MoUs on archiving cooperation and the prevention of violent extremism also reflect the importance both countries attach to preserving national heritage, strengthening public institutions, and promoting safe, resilient societies. Such collaboration supports not only administrative and technical advancement, but also the broader goal of fostering social cohesion, informed governance, and greater regional understanding.
President Dr Muizzu is currently on a State Visit to Sri Lanka at the invitation of President Disanayaka. The visit reflects the close and cordial ties that have long existed between the Maldives and Sri Lanka and provides an important platform for further enhancing bilateral engagement. The exchange of the seven MoUs during the visit adds fresh momentum to this relationship and signals a shared intention to continue building a partnership that is constructive, modern, and beneficial to the people of both countries.
