His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and His Excellency Anura Kumara Disanayaka, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, held official talks today at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo as part of President Dr Muizzu’s State Visit to Sri Lanka, reaffirming the close and longstanding partnership between the two neighbouring countries.
During the discussions, both leaders highlighted the enduring friendship between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, noting the significance of the two nations having marked 60 years of formal diplomatic relations in July 2025. The talks reflected the deep mutual respect that continues to characterize relations between the two countries, supported by decades of cooperation and a strong foundation of trust, regional understanding, and shared interests.
The two Presidents also expressed appreciation for the strong people-to-people ties that continue to enrich bilateral relations. In this regard, they acknowledged the meaningful contributions made by Maldivian and Sri Lankan nationals to each other’s development over the years, reflecting a relationship that extends beyond diplomacy into education, professional exchange, healthcare, business, and social cooperation. These longstanding human connections remain one of the most valued aspects of the bilateral partnership and continue to strengthen the spirit of friendship between the two nations.
The official talks concluded with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to further strengthening existing bilateral cooperation across a wide range of sectors. These include economic cooperation, youth empowerment, education, culture and heritage, healthcare and welfare, security cooperation, and fisheries, among other areas of mutual interest. The outcome of the discussions reflects a shared vision to expand collaboration in ways that support national development priorities while also contributing to regional stability and prosperity.
The engagement also underscored the importance both countries place on maintaining regular high-level dialogue and advancing cooperation through practical partnerships that benefit their peoples. With the Maldives and Sri Lanka sharing close geographic proximity and longstanding historical ties, the discussions in Colombo carried particular significance in shaping the next phase of bilateral engagement in a constructive and forward-looking manner.
Cabinet Ministers and senior Government officials from both the Maldives and Sri Lanka were also in attendance, reflecting the importance attached to the visit and to the continued strengthening of relations between the two countries. President Dr Muizzu’s State Visit is widely seen as a valuable opportunity to further consolidate bilateral ties and deepen cooperation in areas that will bring lasting benefits to both nations.
