Velana International Airport yesterday marked its 60th anniversary, with Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) holding a series of internal events to commemorate the milestone and recognise the commitment and service of its employees. The anniversary celebrations reflected the significance of the airport’s long-standing role in supporting national connectivity and enabling the continued growth of the Maldives as a leading global tourism destination.

The day’s programme began with a flag-hoisting ceremony held near Terminal 1, led by MACL Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed together with Deputy Managing Director Mujthaba Latheef. The event was attended by senior management, including Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Lam’aan, as well as employees from across the company. Following the ceremony, a commemorative cake-cutting was held as part of the official observance of the airport’s six decades of operations.

Throughout the day, MACL’s leadership team visited various departments to meet employees and personally convey appreciation for their contribution to the organisation. The engagement underscored the importance of the airport’s workforce in maintaining the smooth functioning of one of the country’s most important national infrastructures. The anniversary celebrations placed strong emphasis on staff recognition, reflecting the company’s acknowledgement that the airport’s progress over the past 60 years has been built on the dedication, professionalism and resilience of its people.

The programme concluded with an evening gathering during which MACL presented awards linked to its internal anniversary activities. Recognition was given to the winning entry in the anniversary logo design competition, while the top-performing department in the inter-departmental decoration initiative was also honoured. These activities added a celebratory and collaborative spirit to the occasion, highlighting the sense of unity and pride shared across the organisation.

The 60-year anniversary of Velana International Airport stands as a significant moment in the history of the Maldives’ aviation sector. Over the decades, the airport has remained at the centre of the country’s international connectivity, serving as the primary gateway for visitors and playing a vital role in supporting tourism, trade and national development. As the Maldives continues to strengthen its global presence as a premier island destination, the airport’s continued growth and operational excellence remain closely linked to the wider success of the country’s tourism industry and economic advancement.
