Siyam World Maldives, a leading resort in Sun Siyam Resorts’ Lifestyle Collection, has achieved an important milestone in its sustainability journey with the successful energising of the first phase of its solar photovoltaic system, bringing 300 kW of renewable power online as part of a wider on-island solar programme expected to reach a total capacity of 2.7 MW. The development reflects the resort’s continued investment in environmentally responsible operations while reinforcing its position as one of the Maldives’ forward-looking hospitality destinations that combines large-scale luxury experiences with practical sustainability solutions.

The newly operational phase is part of Sun Siyam’s broader renewable energy strategy under the Sun Siyam Care sustainability framework, which is focused on reducing dependence on diesel-based energy systems across the group’s portfolio. With the first phase now active, Siyam World is generating approximately 1,080 kWh of clean energy each day. This is expected to reduce diesel consumption by an estimated 280 litres daily while also contributing to a lower carbon footprint for the island. The achievement marks a meaningful step for the resort as it continues to integrate renewable energy into its day-to-day operations in a way that supports both environmental priorities and long-term business resilience.

Speaking on the progress, Resort Manager Ausy Waseem said this was the kind of development the resort is proud to see at Siyam World, describing it as practical, forward-looking and genuinely impactful for the island. He noted that the team had worked hard to bring the project to life and that it was encouraging to see solar energy beginning to play a growing role in powering the resort’s operations. He further emphasised that sustainability at Siyam World must go beyond statements and should be reflected through meaningful action that delivers measurable environmental value while strengthening the long-term resilience of the business. He added that this direction is closely aligned with the vision of the group’s founder, Ahmed Siyam Mohamed.

For Siyam World, the solar project represents more than an infrastructure upgrade. It reflects a broader operational philosophy that increasingly places sustainability at the centre of resort development and management. As one of the Maldives’ most expansive and experience-driven island destinations, Siyam World has built a strong reputation for offering a vibrant and diverse holiday environment, and the integration of renewable energy into its operations shows how premium hospitality and responsible tourism can progress together. The solar programme supports several key pillars of Sun Siyam Care, including the shift towards renewable energy, improved resource efficiency, and the development of local technical expertise.

Across the wider Sun Siyam Resorts portfolio, renewable initiatives under this framework are expected to generate close to six million kWh of renewable energy annually. At the same time, these projects are helping to strengthen in-house capabilities by supporting the training of engineering teams in solar system management and maintenance. This focus on capacity-building highlights an important dimension of the company’s sustainability approach, where environmental progress is matched by investment in people, skills, and long-term operational knowledge.

Siyam World has already established a strong foundation in sustainable resort practices through a number of initiatives introduced in recent years. In 2025, the resort launched its Plastic Upcycling Center, an initiative designed to transform plastic waste into durable logs that can be used to create furniture and other functional items. The project has helped reduce landfill waste while giving discarded materials a valuable second life, supporting a more circular approach to resource use on the island. Together with the expansion of solar energy, this initiative reflects a practical commitment to reducing environmental impact while maintaining the quality and vibrancy of the guest experience.

As further phases of the solar programme continue, Siyam World is strengthening its role as a resort that embraces innovation not only in leisure and lifestyle offerings, but also in environmental stewardship. The latest progress demonstrates how resorts in the Maldives can take meaningful steps towards cleaner energy, greater resource efficiency, and more resilient operations, while continuing to deliver the world-class island experiences for which the destination is known. For global travellers and industry observers alike, Siyam World’s progress offers a positive example of how sustainability can be meaningfully embedded into the future of luxury hospitality in the Maldives.
