Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, has appointed MEGACAP Aviation Services Ltd as its General Sales Agent for China, reinforcing the airline’s efforts to deepen air connectivity between the Maldives and one of its most important international tourism markets. The appointment reflects Maldivian’s continued strategic focus on China as the airline works to enhance its presence, expand trade engagement, and support growing travel demand between the two countries.

China continues to play a major role in the Maldives’ tourism performance, with visitor arrivals reaching 329,110, marking a 25 per cent increase compared to the previous year and accounting for 14.6 per cent of total tourist arrivals. The strong momentum has remained steady into 2026, with 86,464 Chinese visitors recorded by mid-March, representing 15.6 per cent of total arrivals. These figures underline the sustained importance of the Chinese market to the Maldivian tourism industry and highlight the value of strengthening airline partnerships and market representation to further support this growth.

Maldivian currently operates weekly flights between Malé and destinations in China using its Airbus A330-200 aircraft. Introduced in January 2025, these routes form part of the airline’s ongoing operations in the Chinese market and are designed to facilitate convenient travel between the Maldives and China. The airline’s long-haul service plays an important role in linking international travellers directly to the Maldives, supporting not only visitor arrivals but also wider tourism and hospitality activity across the country.

The appointment of MEGACAP Aviation Services Ltd is expected to enhance Maldivian’s engagement with travel trade partners and tour operators in China, while also broadening the airline’s market reach. Through stronger representation in the Chinese market, the airline aims to build closer industry relationships, improve visibility among travel sellers, and create greater opportunities to attract travellers seeking premium leisure experiences in the Maldives. This development comes at a time when the Maldives continues to be regarded as a highly desirable destination for Chinese holidaymakers, particularly those seeking luxury, exclusivity, natural beauty, and seamless access to world-class island hospitality.

For the Maldivian tourism sector, stronger air service ties with China are especially significant for resorts across the country. The Maldives remains internationally recognised for its collection of high-end private island resorts, distinctive guest experiences, and exceptional marine environment. Reliable international access is a key factor in supporting resort occupancy, guest confidence, and long-term market growth. By strengthening its commercial presence in China, Maldivian is contributing to the wider tourism ecosystem that supports resorts, guesthouses, tourism service providers, and local businesses connected to the visitor economy.

Maldivian’s role in the travel journey extends beyond international arrivals. The airline also operates an extensive domestic network within the Maldives, providing onward connections from Velana International Airport to resorts and inhabited islands across the country. This domestic reach is especially valuable in a destination made up of dispersed islands, where smooth transfers are central to the visitor experience. For resort guests arriving from overseas, convenient domestic connectivity helps ensure efficient access to properties across multiple atolls, supporting the country’s reputation for delivering well-coordinated and high-quality travel experiences.

Commenting on the appointment, Managing Director of Maldivian Ibrahim Iyas said the decision reflects the airline’s continued focus on the Chinese market and its intention to strengthen partnerships within the sector. His remarks underline Maldivian’s broader commitment to building sustainable international relationships that support tourism growth and position the airline as a key contributor to the Maldives’ connectivity ambitions.

The appointment of MEGACAP Aviation Services Ltd represents another positive step in Maldivian’s ongoing international development, as the airline continues to align its commercial strategy with the Maldives’ tourism priorities. With China maintaining its position as one of the country’s most important visitor markets, strengthened airline representation and improved market engagement are expected to support continued growth, benefit resort destinations across the archipelago, and further enhance the Maldives’ appeal among global travellers.
