The Maldives Zakat House, in collaboration with ISRA Association Maldives, has extended humanitarian assistance to the war-affected people of Gaza, Palestine, through the distribution of essential food aid funded by a portion of this year’s Fitr Zakat collections. The initiative reflects the continued commitment of the Maldives to support vulnerable Muslim communities facing severe hardship, while also demonstrating the compassionate spirit of the Maldivian people during a time of profound humanitarian need.

Under this effort, a total of USD 32,425 from the Fitr Zakat proceeds was allocated for the preparation and distribution of food packs to vulnerable families in Gaza. The food packs contain staple items such as flour, cooking oil, and canned food products, all of which are critically important for families enduring the ongoing crisis and shortages in the region. At a time when access to daily necessities remains severely constrained for many households in Gaza, this assistance is expected to provide timely relief and support to those most in need.

ISRA Association Maldives played an important role in coordinating the relief effort. As a civil society organisation committed to advocating for Palestinian rights and delivering humanitarian assistance, the association helped facilitate the implementation of this support to ensure that the aid reached affected communities. The collaboration between the Maldives Zakat House and ISRA Association Maldives highlights the value of partnership between national institutions and humanitarian organisations in responding effectively to urgent international crises.

This humanitarian contribution also reflects the wider sense of Islamic solidarity embraced by the Maldivian community. The decision to allocate part of the Fitr Zakat funds to support families in Gaza illustrates the strong sense of responsibility felt by the people of the Maldives toward fellow Muslims facing conflict, displacement, and deprivation. It is a meaningful expression of unity, compassion, and collective care that resonates deeply across the Islamic world.

According to the Maldives Zakat House, more than USD 972,762 was collected in Fitr Zakat this year, marking the highest amount recorded over the past three years. The record collection underscores a notable rise in public generosity and trust in the zakat system, while also reflecting the willingness of the Maldivian public to contribute to both domestic and international humanitarian causes during Ramadan.

The Zakat House further stated that the remaining Fitr Zakat funds were distributed locally, with a record USD 389 per head provided as Zakat al-Fitr to all registered poor and needy individuals this Ramadan. This dual approach of supporting vulnerable communities at home while also responding to an urgent humanitarian emergency abroad demonstrates the broad social value of zakat and the important role it continues to play in strengthening welfare, dignity, and solidarity across communities.

The initiative stands as a positive example of how faith-based charitable contributions can be mobilised to address pressing humanitarian needs beyond national borders. Through this assistance to Gaza, the Maldives Zakat House and its partners have reaffirmed the enduring values of mercy, generosity, and international Islamic brotherhood that remain central to the spirit of Ramadan and the institution of zakat.
