A portion of the Fitr Zakat collected across the Maldives has been allocated to humanitarian relief efforts for the people of Gaza, Palestine, reflecting the country’s continued commitment to extending compassionate support to communities facing severe hardship. According to the Maldives Zakat House, USD 32,425 has been handed over to ISRA Association Maldives, a prominent civil society organisation known for its humanitarian work and advocacy for Palestinian rights. The contribution will be used specifically to provide urgently needed food assistance to families in Gaza who continue to endure the devastating effects of ongoing conflict, displacement, and worsening living conditions.
The support directed to Gaza highlights the broader humanitarian value of Zakat as a mechanism not only for local social protection but also for responding to urgent needs affecting vulnerable Muslim communities beyond national borders. By channelling part of the Fitr Zakat proceeds through ISRA Association Maldives, the initiative is expected to help strengthen the delivery of timely food aid to affected households, many of whom are facing acute shortages of essential supplies. ISRA Association Maldives welcomed the contribution and described it as an important source of relief for vulnerable communities, reaffirming the significance of solidarity and collective responsibility during times of crisis.
Alongside the international humanitarian assistance extended to Gaza, the Zakat House also confirmed that USD 27,480 from this year’s Fitr Zakat collection has been allocated to the Trust Fund of the Ministry of Social and Family Development to support underprivileged individuals and families within the Maldives. This dual allocation reflects a balanced and inclusive approach in the management of Zakat funds, ensuring that both domestic welfare priorities and urgent international humanitarian concerns are addressed in a meaningful and principled manner.
The Zakat House further announced that Fitr Zakat collections reached more than USD 972,762 this year, marking the highest amount recorded over the past three years. The strong increase in contributions demonstrates a growing culture of charitable giving and public trust in the country’s Zakat system, while also enhancing the capacity of institutions to deliver assistance where it is needed most. In line with Islamic principles governing the distribution of Zakat, the funds were disbursed to eligible recipients, including a record USD 389 per person as Zakat al-Fitr for all registered poor and needy individuals during Ramadan this year.
This year’s collection and distribution reflect the important role of the Maldives’ Zakat framework in advancing both social welfare and humanitarian outreach. The allocation to Gaza underscores the country’s moral and religious commitment to supporting distressed communities, while the assistance provided locally reinforces national efforts to protect vulnerable groups and promote social wellbeing.
