Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives has launched a coral restoration initiative designed to support the long-term recovery and resilience of its house reef, reflecting the resort’s continued commitment to environmental sustainability and marine conservation in the Maldives. Surrounded by vibrant coral reefs that sustain a remarkable diversity of marine life, the resort recognises the importance of preserving these delicate ecosystems, which play a crucial role in maintaining ocean health and protecting coastlines while supporting thousands of marine species that depend on coral habitats for survival.

Coral reefs are among the most fragile ecosystems on the planet and are increasingly under pressure from environmental stressors such as rising ocean temperatures, coral bleaching, and human activity. As these threats continue to affect reef systems worldwide, conservation efforts at local levels have become increasingly important to ensure the survival and regeneration of coral ecosystems. In response to these global environmental challenges, Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives has taken proactive steps to assist reef regeneration through a structured coral restoration programme that focuses on rebuilding coral habitats within the resort’s surrounding lagoon and reef areas.

As part of the programme, the resort recently installed 25 coral frames that have been carefully planted with coral fragments collected from naturally broken corals found in the surrounding waters. These fragments are attached to specially designed frames that provide a stable foundation for coral growth. Over time, the fragments will grow and fuse with one another, gradually forming new coral colonies that help restore the reef structure and enhance the ecological health of the underwater environment.

As the corals mature, the newly formed colonies will create shelter and feeding grounds for a wide variety of marine species, contributing to the restoration of the reef ecosystem and supporting the natural balance of marine life around the island. Healthy coral reefs are essential not only for biodiversity but also for maintaining the beauty and vibrancy of the Maldives’ underwater landscapes, which attract divers, snorkellers, and marine enthusiasts from around the world.

Beyond reef restoration, the initiative also serves as an important platform for raising awareness about marine conservation among guests and team members at the resort. Through ongoing monitoring of the coral frames and educational engagement, Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives aims to encourage greater understanding of the importance of protecting coral reefs and preserving the marine environment for future generations.

By nurturing these coral frames and closely tracking their development, the resort contributes to strengthening the resilience of its surrounding reef ecosystem while supporting broader conservation efforts across the Maldives. The initiative reflects the growing role of the tourism sector in promoting environmental stewardship and demonstrates how resorts can actively participate in protecting the natural heritage that makes the Maldives one of the world’s most celebrated marine destinations.
