The participation agreement was signed by the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Visit Maldives Corporation, Mr. Ibrahim Shiuree, reinforcing the country’s commitment to engaging with one of the most significant international events scheduled for the region in the coming years.
The agreement signals the progression from early planning discussions to the next stage of preparations for the global exposition. With the formalization of participation, Visit Maldives Corporation will now commence detailed preparations to develop the Maldives’ national presence at the event. The planned participation will highlight the country’s position as a leading global tourism destination while emphasizing its ongoing efforts in environmental stewardship, sustainable tourism development, and the preservation of its unique cultural heritage. The initiative will also provide an opportunity to showcase the Maldives’ continued commitment to responsible tourism practices, marine conservation, and the sustainable management of its natural resources.
Belgrade Expo 2027 will be held in the Serbian capital from 15 May to 15 August 2027 under the theme “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All.” The international exposition is expected to welcome more than 120 participating countries and attract over four million visitors from across the world, positioning it among the largest global gatherings scheduled for the region. The Expo will provide a dynamic platform for participating nations to present their cultural narratives, technological advancements, and social initiatives while fostering dialogue and collaboration between countries, institutions, and global audiences.
For the Maldives, participation in Belgrade Expo 2027 offers an important platform to expand engagement with emerging tourism markets in the Balkans and across the broader European region. The Expo will allow the country to introduce new audiences to the Maldives’ distinctive tourism experiences, including its world-renowned island resorts, pristine beaches, vibrant marine ecosystems, and diverse cultural traditions. The Maldives’ tourism sector has long been recognized internationally for its high standards of hospitality, luxury resort offerings, and commitment to environmental protection, with many resorts operating on principles of sustainability, coral reef conservation, and community engagement.
The national presence at the Expo is also expected to highlight the Maldives’ leadership in ocean stewardship and climate advocacy, reflecting the country’s ongoing efforts to protect fragile marine ecosystems while promoting sustainable tourism development. Through exhibitions, cultural showcases, and engagement programmes, the Maldives will share its experiences in balancing tourism growth with environmental responsibility, demonstrating how the nation’s tourism industry continues to integrate conservation initiatives, renewable energy adoption, and sustainable infrastructure across many of its resort islands.
Commenting on the development, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Visit Maldives Corporation, Ibrahim Shiuree, stated that preparations for Belgrade Expo 2027 are being coordinated through close collaboration among several national institutions. He noted that Visit Maldives has been working closely with relevant ministries and national authorities to ensure a well-coordinated and comprehensive national representation at the event. According to him, this collaborative approach will allow the Maldives to present a unified national identity that brings together tourism, culture, sustainability, and innovation on a prominent international stage.
Visit Maldives Corporation will continue its engagement with the Belgrade Expo 2027 organizing committee as well as national stakeholders in the coming months to further develop the Maldives’ pavilion concept and programme. The pavilion is expected to highlight the country’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and progressive environmental initiatives while offering visitors an immersive experience that reflects the Maldives’ unique island lifestyle and globally recognized tourism excellence.
Participation in Belgrade Expo 2027 is expected to strengthen the Maldives’ international outreach and further expand its engagement with European travel markets. The platform will provide valuable opportunities for cultural exchange, international dialogue, and tourism promotion while enabling the Maldives to share its experiences in sustainable island tourism with a global audience. Through this participation, the Maldives aims to reinforce its reputation as one of the world’s most desirable travel destinations while continuing to promote responsible tourism and environmental stewardship on the international stage.
