The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has extended a generous humanitarian contribution to the Republic of Maldives through the donation of dates to support the Maldivian people, reflecting the strong and longstanding relationship between the two nations. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance of Saudi Arabia donated 15 tons of dates to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs of the Maldives, with a special handover ceremony held today at the Islamic Centre in Malé to formally present the contribution.

The donation was officially handed over on behalf of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by His Excellency Yahya Hassan Al-Qahtani, Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to the Maldives. The Minister of Islamic Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, formally accepted the donation on behalf of the Government and people of the Maldives, highlighting the continued spirit of cooperation and mutual goodwill shared between the two countries.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Dr. Shaheem conveyed sincere appreciation to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, and the Government of Saudi Arabia for their continued support and friendship toward the Maldives. He noted that such contributions reflect the deep-rooted ties built on shared values, cultural understanding, and religious cooperation that have developed over many years. The Minister also commended the leadership and efforts of Sheikh Dr. Abdullatif bin Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh, Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance of Saudi Arabia, for advancing collaborative religious outreach initiatives and strengthening partnerships that benefit Muslim communities internationally.

Dr. Shaheem further acknowledged the consistent engagement of the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in the Maldives, emphasizing its active role in nurturing bilateral relations and supporting initiatives that promote social welfare and community well-being. The ceremony underscored the importance both nations place on cooperation that extends beyond diplomacy to include humanitarian assistance and community support, particularly during significant periods of the Islamic calendar when such contributions carry added social value.

In addition to the 15 tons of dates presented during the ceremony, Saudi Arabia has confirmed a total donation of 50 tons of dates for the Maldivian people this year. Authorities from both countries are currently coordinating logistical arrangements to ensure efficient distribution across the Maldives, enabling communities throughout the islands to benefit from the contribution.

The annual donation of dates continues to hold meaningful significance for Maldivian communities, particularly as dates remain an essential part of daily nutrition and religious observances. The initiative also reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader commitment to supporting Muslim communities worldwide through humanitarian outreach and cooperation programs. For the Maldives, the contribution represents not only material assistance but also a reaffirmation of enduring friendship and collaboration between two nations connected through shared faith, mutual respect, and a common vision of community development and well-being.
