Bank of Maldives has introduced an enhanced digital service designed to simplify how Maldivians travelling overseas for medical treatment access foreign currency, enabling customers to apply for medical dollars directly through its Mobile Banking App. The new process allows applicants to submit required documentation electronically and monitor the progress of their requests in real time, reducing the need for in-person visits and streamlining administrative procedures for patients and their families during critical periods of medical planning.
The service is aimed at improving convenience and efficiency for individuals seeking healthcare abroad, particularly those requiring timely financial arrangements before travel. Through the updated system, customers receiving overseas medical treatment under national support schemes such as Aasandha and the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) are eligible to obtain up to USD 2,000 in medical dollars. Individuals who are self-financing their treatment can access up to USD 1,000, providing additional flexibility for patients managing healthcare expenses independently.
As part of the revised process, approved medical dollars will now be credited exclusively to United States Dollar accounts, ensuring secure and transparent transactions aligned with international payment requirements commonly associated with overseas medical services. Customers who do not currently hold a USD account can conveniently open one through the Mobile Banking App, allowing the entire application and account setup process to be completed digitally without additional paperwork.
The initiative reflects the bank’s continued focus on expanding digital banking solutions that respond to everyday needs of customers while supporting essential services such as healthcare access. By integrating application submission, document verification, account management, and status tracking into a single digital platform, the new feature is expected to ease financial preparations for medical travel and provide greater assurance for Maldivians seeking treatment abroad. The development further strengthens the role of digital banking in improving accessibility and efficiency within the country’s financial services sector while supporting citizens during important personal and medical journeys.
