Velaa Private Island in the Maldives has introduced a newly reimagined Ocean Pool House, presenting an elevated interpretation of contemporary coastal living that blends refined architecture, bespoke interiors and artisanal craftsmanship. Set within the ultra-luxury private island resort, the redesigned space reflects a carefully curated balance between sophistication and relaxation, offering guests an immersive environment shaped by thoughtful design and a deep connection to the surrounding ocean landscape.
The transformation of the Ocean Pool House was led by Joy Alexandre Harb, principal architect and founder of JYH International Architects, whose contextual and human-centred architectural philosophy guided the project. Harb’s vision enhances the natural dialogue between light, water and space, creating a seamless flow throughout the residence while preserving harmony with the island’s natural environment. The design introduces clarity and openness, allowing the coastal setting to become an integral part of the living experience while maintaining a sense of privacy and calm associated with high-end island retreats.
Interior creative direction was shaped by designer Eva Szumilas, whose furniture concepts bring sculptural elegance together with tactile comfort. Her approach emphasizes proportion, materiality and usability, ensuring that each element contributes to an atmosphere that feels both sophisticated and welcoming. The interiors reflect understated luxury, where craftsmanship and comfort coexist to create spaces suited for extended stays and personalised guest experiences.
The design narrative is further enriched through curated furniture selections supplied by L´ATELIER, led by Aziz Moussawer. Known for sourcing distinctive and expressive pieces, the studio introduced furniture that adds individuality and artistic character to the Ocean Pool House. These elements provide visual interest while reinforcing the resort’s commitment to craftsmanship and curated design rather than uniform luxury aesthetics.
Among the defining features of the redesigned residence is the inclusion of the iconic Litho chair by Pierre Frey. Recognised internationally for its bold form and exceptional craftsmanship, the piece functions both as a practical seating element and as a sculptural focal point within the living spaces, reinforcing the project’s emphasis on timeless yet contemporary design language.
The interior composition is completed by bespoke carpets created by BM HOME under the direction of Elif Paşalıoğlu Demirtaş. These custom-made pieces introduce warmth, texture and subtle layering, grounding the interiors while harmonising with the broader material palette. Together, architectural vision, curated furnishings and handcrafted details create a cohesive environment that elevates the overall guest experience.
Located in the Noonu Atoll, Velaa Private Island continues to position itself among the Indian Ocean’s most exclusive private island destinations. Designed by award-winning Czech architect Petr Kolář, the resort reflects an elegant fusion of Maldivian cultural inspiration and contemporary luxury, integrating local nuances into a modern hospitality concept. The island itself carries symbolic meaning, with “Velaa” translating to “turtle” in the local language, inspired by generations of sea turtles that nest and hatch on its shores. Viewed from above, the over-water villas are arranged to resemble the head of a turtle, while the island forms its body, reinforcing a design identity rooted in nature.
The resort features 47 private villas, houses and exclusive residences designed to prioritise privacy, space and personalised service. Eighteen of these accommodations are positioned over water, offering uninterrupted ocean views, while the Romantic Pool Residence is accessible only by boat, providing an even greater level of seclusion for guests seeking exclusivity. With the introduction of the redesigned Ocean Pool House, Velaa Private Island further strengthens its reputation for delivering tailored luxury experiences that combine architectural innovation, design excellence and the natural beauty of the Maldives into a unified hospitality offering for global travellers.
