The tourism sector of the Maldives continues to demonstrate strong performance and operational stability, with the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism and the Environment showing that 98.4 percent of registered tourism facilities across the country are currently in operation. The high operational rate reflects sustained confidence within the industry and highlights the Maldives’ continued ability to deliver world-class hospitality experiences to visitors from around the globe.
According to the ministry’s data, the Maldives presently maintains a total of 68,095 registered tourist accommodation beds, of which 67,009 beds are actively in service. This level of utilisation indicates the readiness of the country’s tourism infrastructure to accommodate increasing global travel demand while maintaining service quality across diverse accommodation categories. The operational facilities include 179 resorts, 911 guesthouses, 169 safari vessels, and 16 hotels, collectively forming a well-balanced tourism ecosystem that caters to different travel preferences and market segments.
Resorts remain the cornerstone of the Maldivian tourism industry, accounting for the largest share of accommodation capacity with 44,807 beds. Spread across private islands throughout the archipelago, Maldivian resorts continue to attract international travellers seeking privacy, luxury, and immersive natural experiences. These resorts offer a distinctive blend of overwater villas, beachfront accommodations, marine adventures, wellness retreats, and sustainable hospitality practices that have strengthened the Maldives’ reputation as one of the world’s most desirable holiday destinations. Many properties continue to invest in environmental conservation, renewable energy initiatives, and community engagement programmes, reinforcing the country’s commitment to responsible tourism while enhancing guest experiences through personalised services and high standards of comfort.
Guesthouses contribute significantly to the diversification of the tourism sector, providing 16,171 beds and enabling visitors to experience local island life and Maldivian culture more closely. The steady growth of guesthouse tourism has supported small and medium enterprises across inhabited islands, expanding economic opportunities and promoting inclusive tourism development. Meanwhile, safari vessels offer 3,433 beds, delivering unique liveaboard experiences that allow travellers to explore multiple atolls, dive sites, and marine ecosystems during a single journey. Hotels, with 2,598 beds, continue to serve urban and transit travellers, particularly in key hubs such as Malé and Hulhumalé, complementing the broader tourism offering.
The increase in operational facilities has closely aligned with rising tourist arrivals to the Maldives. So far in 2026, the country has welcomed 312,343 visitors, representing a 5.6 percent increase compared to the 295,762 tourists recorded during the same period last year. The steady upward trend reflects growing global confidence in the Maldives as a safe, high-quality destination supported by reliable infrastructure, seamless connectivity, and consistent service standards. A notable milestone was achieved on 8 February, when the Maldives recorded its highest single-day arrival figure to date, welcoming 10,462 tourists, demonstrating strong seasonal demand and expanding international interest.
Looking ahead, the government has set an ambitious target of attracting 2.5 million tourists in 2026, representing an increase of 300,000 visitors compared to the 2.2 million arrivals recorded in 2025. The continued expansion of accommodation capacity, combined with strategic marketing efforts and sustained investments in resort development and tourism services, positions the Maldives to further strengthen its standing within the global travel market. As international travel demand continues to recover and evolve, the Maldives remains well-prepared to welcome visitors with its signature blend of natural beauty, premium hospitality, and diverse tourism experiences that appeal to travellers worldwide.
