Nobu Hospitality has confirmed plans to expand its global portfolio with the development of a mixed-use ultra-luxury resort and branded residence project in Laamu Atoll, marking the brand’s first entry into the Maldives. The new development will be situated on the private island of Munyafushi and is being undertaken in partnership with Sarat International and Sarat Investments. The project strengthens the Maldives’ growing southern tourism footprint and underscores continued global investor confidence in the destination’s premium hospitality sector.

The resort is planned to comprise 26 beach villas and 30 overwater villas, offering one- and two-bedroom configurations tailored for high-end international travellers. The architectural concept is expected to embody Nobu’s signature minimalist aesthetic, incorporating natural materials, refined textures and a muted colour palette designed to harmonise with the surrounding seascape and tropical environment. The layout and design philosophy aim to create a seamless relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing guests to experience privacy while remaining immersed in the natural beauty of Laamu Atoll.

A distinctive element of the project is the introduction of ten Nobu Island Estate Residences, each occupying its own private island within the development. These exclusive estates are designed as standalone ownership offerings for discerning buyers seeking complete seclusion paired with access to world-class hospitality services. Each residence is expected to feature multiple bedrooms, pavilion-style living spaces, private beachfront access and dedicated leisure amenities. Owners will enjoy access to the hotel’s restaurants, spa, recreational facilities and guest services via short boat transfers, blending the autonomy of private island living with the conveniences of a luxury resort.

The resort’s culinary experience will centre around a Nobu restaurant located on a separate island within the project, reinforcing the brand’s global reputation for innovative Japanese-Peruvian cuisine. Additional facilities are planned to include a spa, fitness centre, diving centre, tennis courts, event venues and a main swimming pool, creating a comprehensive destination suited for both leisure travellers and private events. The inclusion of a dedicated diving centre further highlights the natural appeal of Laamu Atoll, known for its marine biodiversity and pristine reefs.

Trevor Horwell, Chief Executive Officer of Nobu Hospitality, stated that the Maldives has been under consideration for some time due to its alignment with the brand’s international resort strategy. He noted that the development is intended to present a distinctive concept rather than replicate existing models, focusing on a refined interpretation of island luxury. Ali Ahsan, Managing Director of Sarat International, described the initiative as a high-end residential and hospitality project that brings together thoughtful design, craftsmanship and a carefully selected location to create a compelling investment and lifestyle opportunity.

The announcement reflects sustained international interest in branded residences and private island ownership in the Maldives, particularly in atolls beyond the traditional central tourism hubs. In recent years, Laamu Atoll has attracted several large-scale resort investments, signalling a gradual expansion of luxury development further south. For global travellers and investors alike, the upcoming Nobu resort in Laamu is poised to add a new dimension to the Maldives’ reputation as a leading destination for exclusive island experiences and premium lifestyle offerings.
