Maldivian diver Shafraz Naeem has been officially entered into the Visit Maldives Book of Records for two extraordinary achievements accomplished during the Across Maldives 2026 expedition, organised in collaboration with Visit Maldives, reinforcing the Maldives’ standing as a global centre for exceptional marine experiences and underwater exploration. The records recognise the longest underwater distance covered and the longest single-stretch underwater traverse, highlighting a remarkable demonstration of endurance, technical expertise, and deep connection to the ocean environment.
According to Visit Maldives, Naeem covered a total underwater distance of 335 kilometres over a two-week period, completing more than 55 dives across multiple locations. In addition, he achieved a continuous underwater dive of 16.5 kilometres in a single session lasting over five hours and 30 minutes, setting a new benchmark for sustained underwater traversal in the Maldives. These accomplishments reflect not only personal determination but also the exceptional natural conditions, visibility, and biodiversity that make the Maldives one of the world’s most sought-after diving destinations.
Naeem’s earlier achievement from 2022 was also inducted into the Visit Maldives Book of Records. That milestone, recognised as the longest recorded open-water scuba dive in the Maldives and the region, lasted 50 hours and was completed at Anantara Veli Maldives Resort, formerly known as Anantara Lagoon. The dive was carried out to commemorate the 50th anniversary of tourism and diving in the Maldives, adding further significance to a resort long associated with premium marine experiences, tranquil lagoon settings, and a strong commitment to sustainable tourism. The resort’s calm waters, advanced dive facilities, and proximity to vibrant coral ecosystems provided an ideal environment for such an ambitious and technically demanding feat.
The Across Maldives 2026 expedition concluded with an induction ceremony held on 4 February 2026 at Phase One Beach, following the completion of Naeem’s final dive. At the ceremony, Naeem was presented with a commemorative coin and certificate by Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Tourism, together with Ibrahim Shiuree, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Visit Maldives, in recognition of the historic accomplishments.
Speaking at the event, Naeem noted that while the record entries were a proud personal milestone, his broader objective was to inspire more Maldivians to pursue technical diving and to foster stronger awareness of marine conservation. He emphasised the importance of understanding and protecting the ocean environment and expressed gratitude to Visit Maldives and all supporting partners for their encouragement and assistance throughout the expedition.
Visit Maldives CEO Ibrahim Shiuree stated that the new entries represent a valuable addition to the Visit Maldives Book of Records and underscore ongoing efforts to document achievements connected to the nation’s marine environment. He added that initiatives such as the Across Maldives 2026 expedition contribute positively to the Maldives’ international profile in ocean-related activities, adventure tourism, and environmental stewardship.
The expedition received support from a range of partners, with State Trading Organisation participating as a partner, Ooredoo Maldives serving as the technology partner, and beOnd Airlines as the airline partner. Additional support was provided by H78 Hulhumalé, Ocean Junkies, and Safari Southern Cross. Visit Maldives noted that the Across Maldives 2026 expedition forms part of its wider initiatives to promote the Maldives through marine-focused activities and conservation awareness, further strengthening the country’s reputation as a premier destination for sustainable ocean adventures and world-class diving experiences.
