Cruise tourism continues to strengthen the Maldives’ diversified tourism portfolio, with Maldives Immigration reporting that 1,056 tourists have arrived in the country so far this year via cruise ships. The latest arrival was the Crystal Symphony, a luxury cruise liner sailing under the Bahamian flag, which reached Malé City on Friday after departing from Colombo, Sri Lanka. A total of 577 tourists and 496 crew members disembarked and were processed by Immigration authorities, adding further momentum to the steady growth of visitor arrivals.
The Crystal Symphony was scheduled to remain in Maldivian waters for one day, providing guests with the opportunity to experience the capital city and selected nearby destinations. As of Saturday afternoon, the vessel had resumed its voyage and was cruising in the Indian Ocean at 17 knots en route to Praslin Island, Seychelles. The visit highlights the Maldives’ growing appeal as a preferred stopover for premium cruise itineraries in the Indian Ocean region, offering travelers a blend of cultural experiences, urban exploration, and access to world-renowned island resorts.
This visit represents the second cruise ship call to the Maldives this year. The first arrived earlier from Seychelles, carrying 479 tourists and 491 crew members. Cruise ships visiting the Maldives often include multiple ports of call across different atolls, enabling passengers to explore a variety of islands, local communities, and resort destinations within a single journey. This model of travel supports wider economic participation across the tourism value chain, benefiting excursion operators, transport providers, retail outlets, and service sectors.
Beyond cruise tourism, overall visitor numbers continue to reflect strong performance. The Ministry of Tourism has reported that more than 143,211 tourists have visited the Maldives so far this year, representing an increase of 8.3 per cent compared with the same period last year. Russia remains the largest source market, followed by more than 21,000 visitors from the United Arab Emirates and over 16,000 from Italy, underscoring the Maldives’ broad international appeal.
The sustained growth in arrivals, combined with increased cruise ship activity, reinforces the Maldives’ position as a globally competitive and highly desirable destination. With its established reputation for luxury resorts, pristine natural environment, and high service standards, the country continues to attract a diverse range of travelers seeking both exclusive island experiences and enriching cultural encounters, supporting the long-term resilience and expansion of the Maldivian tourism industry.
