President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to further strengthening its relations with India in a mutually beneficial manner, underscoring the enduring friendship and close cooperation between the two neighbouring countries. The President made the remarks in a message shared on social media to mark India’s 77th Republic Day, reflecting the importance the Maldives places on its longstanding partnership with one of the region’s most influential nations.
In his message, President Muizzu extended warm greetings and best wishes to President of India Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Government of India and the people of India on the occasion. He noted that the Maldives and India share a relationship built on mutual respect, trust and strong people-to-people ties, and highlighted that India’s Republic Day symbolises the value placed by the Indian people on upholding freedom, democracy and good governance. Emphasising the positive impact of bilateral cooperation, the President stated that the Maldives looks forward to continuing its work with India to further strengthen excellent ties that have contributed significantly to the welfare and prosperity of the people of both countries.
India’s Republic Day, observed annually on 26 January, commemorates the adoption and enforcement of the Indian Constitution in 1950 and marks the swearing-in of Dr Rajendra Prasad as India’s first President. The occasion holds deep national significance, celebrating the country’s democratic foundations and constitutional values.
The Maldives’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel, also conveyed messages of felicitations to India’s Minister of External Affairs, Dr S. Jaishankar, on behalf of the Government and the people of the Maldives. In his message, Minister Khaleel described Republic Day as a reflection of India’s enduring commitment to democratic principles and inclusive development, and highlighted India’s role as the world’s largest democracy with a rich civilisational history and heritage.
Minister Khaleel noted that India continues to play a central role in promoting peace, stability and cooperation across the region, and emphasised the significant progress achieved in bilateral cooperation between the Maldives and India. He stated that recent engagements between the two countries have further strengthened their close and enduring partnership, and reiterated that the relationship remains defined by trust, mutual understanding and strategic alignment.
Concluding his message, the Foreign Minister extended personal best wishes to Dr Jaishankar for good health and happiness and expressed his hopes for the continued progress and prosperity of the people of India. The messages exchanged on this occasion reflect the shared commitment of both nations to deepen cooperation across a wide range of areas and to continue working together for regional stability, sustainable development and the well-being of their peoples.
