The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has announced the opening of applications for the Global Money Week Comic Competition, a creative initiative designed to encourage financial literacy among young learners through visual storytelling. The competition provides an innovative platform for students to express their understanding of money management concepts by translating key financial principles into engaging comic narratives. By combining creativity with education, the initiative aims to deepen students’ comprehension of financial topics while nurturing their ability to communicate important messages in ways that resonate with their peers and future generations.
MMA highlighted that visual storytelling offers a compelling method for presenting complex ideas in a clear and memorable manner. Through the use of illustrations, dialogue, and structured narratives, comics can simplify financial concepts and make them more accessible and relatable, particularly for younger audiences. The process of creating comics also helps participants strengthen critical thinking and problem-solving skills, while inspiring others to become more mindful and responsible in their financial decisions. MMA emphasized that empowering youth with financial knowledge at an early stage plays a vital role in building a financially aware and resilient society.
As part of the announcement, MMA introduced a range of themes for the competition. These include presenting a financial lesson or concept through a story, depicting a character’s journey of learning and growth in money management, demonstrating how financial literacy enables better decision-making, and illustrating real-life scenarios that show the consequences of poor financial management. Submissions are expected to clearly convey financial literacy concepts, demonstrate effective use of visual storytelling, and communicate meaningful messages about the importance of sound financial practices in everyday life.
The competition is open exclusively to primary school students from grades five to seven. Winners will receive cash prizes and certificates in recognition of their achievements. MMA also noted that selected comics may be published or featured in national campaigns, digital platforms, or financial literacy materials, with full credit given to the authors, offering participants a valuable opportunity to contribute to nationwide awareness efforts.
All submissions, along with copies of participants’ ID cards, must be sent via email to [email protected] by 15:00 hrs on 22 March 2026. MMA encourages eligible students across the Maldives to take part in this creative initiative and use their talents to help shape a more financially informed future.
