The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has announced the opening of the Global Money Week Essay Competition, offering secondary school students across the Maldives an opportunity to explore and articulate their personal relationship with money while strengthening their understanding of financial decision-making and responsibility. The initiative forms part of MMA’s continued efforts to promote financial literacy among young people and to nurture a generation that is better equipped to manage personal finances with confidence and awareness.
The competition is designed to encourage students to reflect on meaningful experiences that have shaped their financial perspectives and to express, through writing, how money influences their lives and the lives of those around them. By engaging in this reflective process, participants are expected to develop deeper insights into everyday financial choices, long-term planning, and the broader role of money in personal growth and social development.
Students may base their essays on one of three themes: a moment or scenario that changed how they think about money; how money has impacted an important decision or experience in their life; or a financial lesson they have learned and what it taught them. Essays should present personal experiences, demonstrate thoughtful reflection, and convey authentic insights in a clear and coherent manner.
The competition is open to all secondary school students from Grade 08 to Grade 10. Winners will receive cash prizes and certificates, with first place awarded MVR 3,000, second place MVR 2,000, and third place MVR 1,000, in addition to formal recognition of their achievement.
All essay submissions must be accompanied by a copy of the participant’s ID card and submitted via email to [email protected] by 15:00 hours on 22 March 2026. MMA encourages eligible students nationwide to take part in this initiative, viewing it as a valuable platform to voice their experiences, strengthen their writing skills, and contribute to a growing culture of financial awareness in the Maldives.
