Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has signed Airport Crisis Management agreements with the Maldives Police Service (MPS) and the Maldives National Air Traffic Services (MNATS), reinforcing coordinated emergency preparedness at Velana International Airport (VIA), the country’s primary international gateway. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on behalf of the MPS by Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen and on behalf of MACL by Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, while MNATS was represented by its Managing Director, Ibrahim Thoha.
The agreements set out clear roles, responsibilities, and procedures for the police and MNATS to enhance the safety and security of VIA during emergencies and disasters. By formalising crisis-response coordination, the framework is expected to strengthen disaster management capacity across agencies, improve communication and coordination in time-critical situations, and support continuous operational improvements that protect passengers, airport staff, airlines, and other airport stakeholders while sustaining service continuity under challenging conditions.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Commissioner Naveen said the agreement will further strengthen cooperation with MACL and help ensure the safety of all airport users. MACL CEO Shareef underscored the importance of the MoU for VIA, describing the airport as a vital facility for the Maldives and noting that effective preparedness for emergencies depends on strong collaboration among relevant institutions. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to maintain international standards of airport safety and operational resilience, supporting confidence among global travellers and aviation partners while safeguarding the reliability of the Maldives’ connectivity with the world.
