Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), in collaboration with Liverpool Football Club (LFC), has announced the winner of its high-energy “Penalty to Paradise” campaign, a football-inspired destination promotion that brought together global fan passion and the promise of a luxury escape to the Maldives. Designed to showcase the islands as a world-class leisure and lifestyle destination, the campaign highlighted the Maldives to millions of football followers while offering one lucky fan the chance to experience it first-hand.

The competition gathered 50 Liverpool FC members for a sudden-death penalty shootout, turning fan engagement into a dramatic on-pitch challenge. After multiple intense rounds, surprise side contests and creative penalty tasks, 19-year-old Finley “Finn” McGovern emerged as the final winner. His victory secured an all-expenses-paid holiday to the Maldives, including an unforgettable stay at Kandima Maldives, one of the country’s most vibrant and contemporary island resorts.

Reflecting on his win moments after scoring the decisive penalty, Finn was overcome with emotion, saying he was “speechless,” adding, “I can’t speak. I don’t know what to say.” Asked who he would bring to enjoy the Maldives experience with him, he chose his twin sister, who had also taken part in the competition but was eliminated earlier in the shootout. Their upcoming journey to the Maldives will now turn a shared football memory into a shared travel experience.

The contest itself was designed to be entertaining and highly shareable, featuring a series of high-pressure penalty rounds, guest appearances and fun challenges such as no-look penalties and panenka attempts. Alongside the main prize, additional rewards were given out during the various rounds, keeping participants and viewers engaged throughout. The final stages saw Finn hold his nerve through sudden-death penalties to secure the Maldives getaway.

At the heart of the prize is Kandima Maldives, a resort that reflects the modern, playful and stylish side of Maldivian hospitality. Set against the backdrop of crystal-clear waters and white sandy beaches, Kandima offers guests a blend of relaxation, adventure and lifestyle-focused experiences. From spacious beach and overwater accommodation to a wide variety of dining venues, water sports and wellness offerings, the resort appeals to younger travellers, couples, friends and families seeking an energetic and social island atmosphere. For Finn and his sister, the resort promises not only a luxurious stay but also the chance to immerse themselves in everything that has made the Maldives a globally sought-after holiday destination – from snorkelling in rich marine life to enjoying sunset views over the Indian Ocean.

The “Penalty to Paradise” campaign will reach an even larger global audience with the release of the full episode across Liverpool FC’s YouTube and social media platforms from 22 December. This digital rollout will allow fans around the world to follow the journey from the first penalty to the final winning kick, while further spotlighting the Maldives and Kandima as aspirational travel choices for football fans and leisure travellers alike.

“Penalty to Paradise” is part of Visit Maldives’ broader global partnership with Liverpool FC, under which the Maldives serves as the club’s Official Tourist Destination Partner for the 2025–2028 seasons. Through a combination of premium LED branding at Anfield Stadium and engaging digital content, the collaboration connects the emotional power of football with the allure of a Maldivian escape. By blending on-field excitement with the promise of world-class resort experiences such as those at Kandima Maldives, the partnership continues to strengthen the Maldives’ position on the world stage as a premier destination for relaxation, lifestyle and unforgettable travel memories.
