The Ambassador of the United States of America to the Maldives, Hugo Yon, has paid a farewell call on Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel, marking the conclusion of his two-year tenure as Washington’s first resident ambassador in Malé. The meeting, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, underscored the steady growth of Maldives–US relations during Ambassador Yon’s posting and reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to continued cooperation.
During the meeting, Dr Khaleel conveyed the Government’s sincere appreciation for Ambassador Yon’s contributions in elevating bilateral engagement. He noted that the presence of a resident US ambassador in Malé had significantly strengthened official dialogue and accelerated collaboration across multiple fronts, including development cooperation, capacity-building initiatives, and broader diplomatic engagement. Dr Khaleel emphasised that this resident presence had helped create new momentum in the relationship, enabling more structured follow-up on joint priorities and opening new avenues for partnership.
Ambassador Yon, reflecting on his tenure, expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality and support extended to him by the Government and the people of the Maldives. He reiterated the United States’ commitment to deepening ties with the Maldives and highlighted that ongoing programmes and initiatives will continue seamlessly as the mission prepares to receive his successor. Ambassador Yon also acknowledged the constructive role played by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in facilitating close coordination between the two governments, particularly on issues of shared interest.
Dr Khaleel commended Ambassador Yon for maintaining a consistently warm and cooperative relationship with Maldivian counterparts throughout his service. He expressed confidence that the strong foundation laid over the past two years would support further expansion of Maldives–US cooperation in the years ahead. The Minister also extended his best wishes for Ambassador Yon’s future endeavours and assured that the Government of Maldives stands ready to fully support and collaborate with the incoming United States ambassador to continue building on the progress achieved during this tenure.
