The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has launched the SYNEX (Synergy Exchange) programme, a strategic initiative to deepen the digitalisation of its operations while creating new growth opportunities for local software enterprises. The programme was formally inaugurated by MACL Executive Director Ibrahim Mahdy at a ceremony held at Velana International Airport (VIA), the primary gateway for international visitors travelling to Maldivian resorts. Through SYNEX, MACL aims to build a closer partnership with the country’s tech and IT ecosystem, positioning the airport as a living laboratory where Maldivian developers can co-create and test solutions that improve service quality, operational efficiency and the overall passenger journey.

SYNEX has been introduced as a platform to promote small and medium software enterprises in the Maldives by enabling them to collaborate directly with MACL on tailored digital solutions for airport operations. According to MACL, the programme begins with a first cohort of seven local software development companies that will work alongside internal teams on projects ranging from passenger services and baggage handling to back-end operational systems and data-driven decision-making. By opening its operational environment to these firms, MACL is expected to create a pipeline of innovative digital tools that can streamline key touchpoints for travellers heading to resorts across the archipelago, from faster processing at immigration and check-in counters to more seamless coordination of seaplane and speedboat transfers.

Speaking at the launch of SYNEX, MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed highlighted the substantial progress already achieved in digitalising VIA’s services, while underscoring that the transformation journey is still at an early stage. He noted that MACL, as a highly profitable company, has the financial capacity to hire its own developers, but has deliberately chosen a partnership-based model that gives local software enterprises an active role in the airport’s digital roadmap. “We are already much more digitalised than before. However, it is just the beginning. MACL is a very profitable company and we have the capacity to hire developers ourselves,” he said, signalling the company’s intention to pair its financial strength with local innovation talent to sustain long-term improvements in service quality and operational resilience.

As the main international airport of the Maldives, located on Hulhulé Island near Malé, VIA handles the vast majority of tourist arrivals and serves as the central hub for transfers to resorts by seaplane and speedboat. The airport hosts the world’s largest seaplane operations and connects guests to hundreds of luxury and premium island resorts spread across multiple atolls. Any enhancement to its digital systems therefore has a direct impact on the resort sector’s value chain—from quicker baggage transfers and real-time gate information to more efficient scheduling of domestic flights and seaplane departures that reduce waiting times for guests after long-haul journeys. With a new international terminal also coming online to expand capacity and elevate the arrival and departure experience, deeper digital integration between airport systems, airline partners and resort operators is expected to further differentiate the Maldives as a high-service, technology-enabled luxury destination.

For resort guests, the benefits of SYNEX are expected to materialise across the entire travel journey. Digital solutions emerging from the programme could support pre-arrival coordination with resorts, automate and track baggage as it is routed from international flights to domestic connections, and optimise resource allocation within the seaplane and speedboat transfer network. This can reduce congestion during peak check-in periods, provide guests with more accurate information on transfer timings, and give resorts better visibility over guest movements so they can prepare personalised welcome experiences in a timely way. More robust data platforms and analytics developed under SYNEX may also help MACL and its partners anticipate seasonal demand patterns, align airport staffing and ground services with flight schedules, and minimise operational disruptions that can impact resort occupancy and guest satisfaction.

MACL has emphasised that the SYNEX programme is fully aligned with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Maldives 2.0 vision, which prioritises digital transformation across key sectors, including tourism, logistics and transport. By investing in collaborative digital innovation at the country’s primary air gateway, SYNEX positions Velana International Airport as a core enabler of that national vision, reinforcing the Maldives’ reputation not only as a world-class resort destination but also as a forward-looking, technology-driven economy. For the growing community of Maldivian software developers, SYNEX offers access to a high-impact operational environment where their solutions can scale quickly, while for resorts and travellers, the programme promises a more connected, predictable and premium journey from arrival at VIA to check-in at their chosen island retreat.
