All international airlines operating to the Maldives are expected to transition to the new international terminal at Velana International Airport before the end of this year, signalling a major upgrade in the country’s primary tourism gateway. Tourism Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, speaking to state media as the current administration marks two years in office, said the terminal has been gradually handling international flights since it became operational in July last year, with authorities now focused on consolidating all overseas operations into the upgraded facility.
Germany’s Condor Airlines is the latest carrier to join the new terminal, shifting its Maldives operations on Thursday. The airline has maintained flights to the Maldives since 1981, underscoring a long-standing relationship with the destination that now continues through a far more advanced passenger facility. Condor’s steady presence in the market has traditionally supported arrivals from key European source markets, and its transition to the new terminal sends a strong signal of confidence to tour operators, resorts, and travel agents promoting premium holiday packages to the Maldives.
The new international terminal was inaugurated on 26 July 2024, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence. Designed to accommodate 7.5 million passengers annually, it represents a major scale-up from the previous terminal’s design capacity and is one of the most significant infrastructure investments in the country’s aviation and tourism sectors, with the project cost estimated at around MVR 6 billion. While the development was initiated during former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration, most of the construction work was carried out under the Maldivian Democratic Party government. The current administration completed substantial finishing works and opened a section of the terminal to international traffic, allowing airlines to begin phased operations.
Official figures show that the inauguration ceremony itself, which featured a drone show and a record-breaking air show, cost more than MVR 18 million. Beyond the symbolism of a high-profile opening, industry stakeholders are closely watching how quickly the expanded capacity will translate into operational efficiencies for airlines and smoother journeys for visitors. With more check-in space, improved boarding facilities, and better passenger handling systems, the upgraded terminal is expected to reduce congestion, shorten processing times, and enhance the overall travel experience factors that directly influence guest satisfaction from the moment they land.
