SME Development Finance Corporation (SDFC) has entered a new chapter in its journey to support entrepreneurship in the Maldives with a full corporate rebrand to “SME Digital”. The new name was formally endorsed at an Extraordinary General Meeting of shareholders held on 30 October and subsequently approved by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA). Following regulatory clearance, the company’s new identity has now been officially registered with the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.

Under its refreshed brand, SME Digital is being developed as an end-to-end digital platform dedicated to Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) operating across all sectors of the Maldivian economy, including many businesses that serve international visitors, such as guesthouses, tour operators, transport providers, cafés, and local experience providers. The company is restructuring its services to go beyond traditional financing and to help entrepreneurs manage financial transactions, streamline day-to-day operations, and improve their access to local and international markets.

This transformation will see SME Digital grow into a specialised financial institution offering integrated resources and digital tools designed to assist businesses at every stage of their development: from start-up and early growth, through expansion, and into full digital transformation. The aim is to create a supportive backbone for Maldivian MSMEs, helping them strengthen their operations and, in turn, enhancing the quality and variety of services available to travellers exploring the islands.

The rebrand follows SME Digital’s recent transition into a subsidiary of the Bank of Maldives (BML), the country’s largest financial institution. Integration work between the two organisations is already underway to deliver more convenient services to customers. A key step has been the enablement of payments for SME Digital facilities directly through the BML Mobile Banking App, using secure API connectivity. This linkage makes it easier for business owners across the atolls to stay up to date with their repayments and manage their cash flow without needing to visit a physical branch.

Looking ahead, SME Digital is preparing to introduce its own SME Digital Mobile App, which is scheduled for launch in the near future. Through this app, customers will be able to update their user profiles, monitor the status and details of their financing facilities, access payment options and tap into a range of digital services from a single, user-friendly interface. In the next phase of development, SME Digital plans to roll out a nationwide digital marketplace, a platform designed to connect entrepreneurs, service providers and business partners across the Maldives. This marketplace is expected to make it easier for MSMEs to promote their products and services, collaborate with other businesses and reach new customer segments, including international tourists seeking authentic local experiences.

Commenting on the rebranding, SME Digital’s CEO, Badhurudheen Hassan, said the new identity represents a renewed commitment to transforming the entire operating environment for small and medium-sized enterprises in the country. He noted that modern businesses require far more than access to capital: they also depend on strong business networks, technical know-how, digital infrastructure and ongoing advisory support. By combining innovative financial solutions with technology-driven platforms and close cooperation among stakeholders, SME Digital aims to promote sustainable growth and long-term success for MSMEs.

A key ambition of the institution is to become the Maldives’ first fully shariah-compliant financial institution specialising in MSMEs while leveraging modern digital technology. This approach reflects the country’s Islamic values while aligning with global best practices in digital finance. SME Digital’s new brand identity and full suite of digital services will be introduced gradually in phases over the coming months, following the acquisition of all necessary permits and licenses from the relevant authorities.

For existing customers, SME Digital has confirmed that the rebranding and name change do not alter any previously approved financing facilities. All sanction details and terms associated with current facilities remain exactly the same. However, the company’s General Terms and Conditions have been updated to reflect the revised brand name and the integration of new systems, ensuring that legal and operational documentation is fully aligned with this new era of digitally driven SME support.

As the Maldivian economy continues to grow, especially in tourism and related service industries, the progress of SME Digital is expected to strengthen the backbone of local enterprise across the islands. For visitors, this translates into a richer network of locally owned businesses—from family-run guesthouses to innovative experience providers, contributing to more authentic and diverse travel experiences throughout the Maldives.
