As part of a high-level visit to the southernmost atolls of the Maldives, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu toured Shangri-La Villingili Resort, where he received a comprehensive update from the resort’s management on the final stages of preparations for its reopening. The President’s visit to the luxury property came during his ongoing tour of Fuvahmulah and Addu City, reflecting continued government attention on boosting tourism and economic development in the southern region.
The management of Shangri-La Villingili Resort shared a detailed presentation highlighting the progress made in bringing the property back to full operational status after a prolonged closure that began in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The resort, which originally opened in 2009, is now targeting a reopening date of 31 December 2025. During the presentation, the management team outlined key upgrades including the complete refurbishment of its overwater villas and dining facilities. Other enhancements include major improvements to the decking areas and the revitalization of other guest amenities throughout the island.
The management also emphasized that a wide range of maintenance and structural works had been carried out over the past three years to ensure the resort meets the standards expected of high-end international travelers. This includes repairs across the property’s infrastructure, ensuring safety, comfort, and a renewed aesthetic appeal in time for the relaunch.
President Dr Muizzu was joined on the visit by senior officials from the Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Environment, members of his Cabinet, as well as several Members of Parliament representing Addu constituencies. The delegation toured the island resort to inspect the progress firsthand and engage with resort executives on future collaboration and the resort’s contribution to local employment and the broader tourism industry in the region.
Shangri-La Villingili is one of the most iconic luxury destinations in the Maldives, offering 284 beds across a selection of beachfront and overwater villas that deliver a secluded, upscale experience for visitors from around the globe. Situated in Addu Atoll, an area renowned for its natural beauty, cultural heritage, and proximity to the Equator, the resort plays a pivotal role in supporting the region’s tourism potential.
The resort’s reopening is expected to further stimulate economic activity in the south, create new job opportunities, and provide a renewed boost to the Maldivian hospitality sector. As the Maldives continues to diversify its tourism offerings across various atolls, the revival of a well-established property like Shangri-La Villingili marks a welcome development for travelers seeking luxury experiences in untapped corners of the Indian Ocean archipelago.
The return of Shangri-La Villingili is anticipated to attract high-value visitors and strengthen the Maldives’ position as a premier destination for exclusive getaways, offering not just luxury, but also cultural richness and pristine natural environments in the country’s southern reaches.
