A major step forward has been taken in enhancing regional connectivity in the southernmost atoll of the Maldives. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially announced the appointment of a globally reputed Chinese engineering firm to carry out the comprehensive design for a proposed bridge linking the islands of Hulhudhoo, Meedhoo, and Hithadhoo in Addu City.
The President, addressing residents of Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo during a visit to the region, confirmed that the firm was selected following an international competitive bidding process. The contract, valued at USD 1 million, mandates the company to deliver complete design plans, including full engineering drawings and technical specifications, for three potential bridge concepts proposed by the Maldivian Government. The agreement also includes the responsibility for conducting feasibility studies for each option to ensure compliance with international engineering and safety standards prior to construction tendering.
Design work for the project commenced last month and is scheduled for submission around March or April 2026. Based on the final feasibility reports, one of the proposed designs will be selected for implementation. President Muizzu expressed confidence that the actual construction work would begin within the next year, aligning with his administration’s broader vision for regional development and inclusive infrastructure planning.
The Chinese company entrusted with the project is recognized as a global leader in large-scale infrastructure and transport engineering. Its involvement underscores the administration’s commitment to leveraging international expertise for critical national projects, especially those that aim to bridge communities and improve accessibility in distant parts of the archipelago.
In addition to the bridge initiative, President Muizzu highlighted a range of ongoing developmental efforts across Addu City. These include upgrades in road infrastructure, waste management systems, and the development of Fitness and Recreation Centres to promote community well-being. Enhancements in financial services are also underway, with the upcoming opening of a new bank branch and installation of a Maldives Islamic Bank ATM, aimed at ensuring equitable access to banking facilities for residents of both Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo.
During his visit, President Muizzu also inaugurated new government service expansions. Passport services have officially commenced in Hulhudhoo, while both ID card and passport issuance services are now available in Meedhoo, significantly easing access to essential public documentation for locals.
Two key healthcare agreements were signed as part of the President’s visit, marking the beginning of work to upgrade the existing health centres in both Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo into full-fledged hospitals. These upgrades are expected to bring substantial improvements to local healthcare delivery and reduce the need for inter-island travel for medical services.
Furthermore, a landmark agreement was signed for the development of a new building for Seenu Atoll School, enhancing the educational infrastructure and capacity in the region.
President Muizzu reiterated that these developments are part of his administration’s broader agenda to ensure equitable development across all regions of the Maldives. He emphasized that the projects in Addu City represent the initial phase of a long-term strategy aimed at delivering sustained economic growth, improved quality of life, and stronger public services across the southern atolls.
