One of the Maldives’ most popular community sporting events, the Dhiraagu Maldives Road Race (DMRR) 2025, has reached a new milestone in sustainable event management. The event was entirely powered by clean, renewable energy generated on-site using a grid-tied solar power system, offsetting the race’s total energy consumption with zero reliance on fossil fuels.
The solar system installed at the race venue generated 1,040 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable electricity during the event, which effectively neutralized approximately 645 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. This achievement underscores Dhiraagu’s ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility by integrating clean energy solutions into national-scale events.
As part of its long-term sustainability strategy, Dhiraagu confirmed that the solar panels used at DMRR 2025 will be repurposed and integrated into its broader solar energy network spanning the Maldives. The company currently operates solar installations on 95 inhabited islands across the nation, contributing to a reduction of approximately 2,053 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. With 19 percent of its total energy consumption now derived from renewable sources, Dhiraagu continues to lead the way in corporate climate action in the Maldives.
In addition to its renewable energy initiatives, Dhiraagu has maintained a consistent focus on reducing waste and single-use plastics during the DMRR since 2019. Through the use of water refill stations placed strategically along the race route, the event successfully avoids the use of an estimated 18,000 plastic bottles every year, another testament to its commitment to environmental stewardship.
