When I Gusti Ayu Ariani first stepped onto Maldivian shores in 2009, she couldn’t have imagined that these remote islands would one day become her professional haven. Today, more than a decade later, she stands among the leading figures in the wellness tourism sector, having been named Wellness Personality of the Year at the prestigious Hotelier Maldives Awards 2025. As Spa & Wellness Manager at Cora Cora Maldives, she now leads the MOKSHA® Spa & Wellbeing Centre—a beacon of personalised wellness experiences nestled in one of the world’s most celebrated resort destinations.
Originally from Bali, Ariani’s early exposure to healing began in her grandparents’ home, where massage was a form of care and connection. Raised in a humble setting, she was taught to be a pillar for her family an ethos that later guided her leadership style. Her professional spa journey began in 2007, and by 2008, she had joined Coconut Spa, a prominent Balinese wellness company operating in the Maldives. Following a rigorous training program in Bali, Ariani was selected to work abroad—a decision that would shape her career in remarkable ways.
Her first role was at Palm Beach Island Resort, then managed by an Italian firm. Ariani recalls her arrival vividly: overwhelmed by isolation and unfamiliar surroundings, she was unsure if she would stay. But a motivating conversation with her employer encouraged her to persevere. That decision marked the start of a resilient journey across leading luxury resorts including LUX* South Ari Atoll, Ayada Maldives, and RIU Palace Maldives, where she gradually ascended into leadership roles.
At LUX*, she took on new challenges, becoming a yoga instructor and eventually assuming the role of spa and wellness manager. Her managerial debut at RIU helped her refine essential leadership skills, mentorship, communication, and service innovation. When she joined Cora Cora Maldives, she brought with her over 15 years of multi-brand, cross-cultural experience. Her focus shifted from technical excellence to empowering others. “I focus on finding solutions and guiding the team, not controlling,” she says. Her approach is rooted in mutual respect and continuous growth, backed by a leadership philosophy that prioritizes empathy and purpose.
Under her guidance, the MOKSHA® Spa & Wellbeing Centre has evolved into an industry benchmark. Its philosophy centers on individual needs rather than fixed packages. Guests are encouraged to voice their concerns before treatments, allowing therapists to customise each session. The resort’s signature “Freedom Time” service model enables guests to purchase blocks of time rather than specific treatments, granting them full flexibility across services. Signature therapies like Essence of Maldives, which incorporates locally sourced coconut oil, resonate deeply with guests seeking an authentic tropical experience.
Sustainability is another pillar of the spa’s ethos. Massage oils are handcrafted on-site using natural bases such as coconut oil, enhanced with essential oils from Sri Lanka. Even coffee used for scrubs is repurposed from roasted beans, embodying eco-conscious luxury. Ariani personally oversees quality assurance and staff development, ensuring that her 12-member team upholds world-class standards through regular training, internal evaluations, and structured onboarding programs for new recruits.
The results are evident. Repeat guests often return to find the same trusted therapists, reinforcing a sense of continuity and trust. Feedback is overwhelmingly positive, an achievement Ariani attributes to her team’s dedication and consistency. “We do internal tests, first with me, then a senior, then a mock guest. This helps us maintain high standards while building confidence in our team,” she explains.
Always striving for innovation, Ariani is now preparing to introduce an advanced treatment concept at MOKSHA® in 2026. Drawing inspiration from global wellness trends, the upcoming therapy will integrate traditional techniques with modern practices. Currently in collaboration talks with a specialised spa brand to supply protocols and equipment, she is training two senior therapists to pioneer the treatment. “We want to be the first in the Maldives to offer this experience,” she says, keeping further details confidential while preparations are underway.
Ariani’s commitment to lifelong learning is equally inspiring. During her vacations in Bali, she has taken English classes, studied yoga and sound healing in India, and completed a certified spa management course at the Bali BISA Training Centre under CIBTAC accreditation, all self-funded through her own savings. Her motivation is simple: to grow not just professionally, but personally.
For Ariani, wellness is more than a job, it is a calling. Her belief that “wellness starts from within” shapes every decision she makes, from guest care to team mentorship. “Taking care of your team is the first step to taking care of your guests,” she says. Her recognition as Wellness Personality of the Year reflects not just her talent, but also her unwavering commitment to wellness as a way of life.
Now deeply rooted in the Maldives after sixteen years, Ariani sees the islands as home. Her journey from giving massages to her grandparents in Bali to managing a leading wellness destination in the Maldives reflects the power of resilience, self-belief, and service to others. “For me, success means making a difference in people’s lives, even in small ways,” she reflects. “That is what truly matters.”
Her story is not just an inspiration for wellness professionals but a testament to the Maldives as a nurturing ground for global talent and transformative guest experiences. For travellers seeking more than luxury for those in pursuit of purpose, healing, and personal renewal, Ariani and the team at MOKSHA® Spa & Wellbeing Centre offer something truly unforgettable.
