Veligandu Maldives Resort Island, a renowned hospitality destination nestled in the Rasdhoo Atoll, is garnering attention for its commitment to nurturing future talent and supporting local communities through a series of robust Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs. Among its most impactful initiatives in 2025 is the “Discover Tourism” Program, an educational and experiential platform designed to spark interest among Maldivian youth in the country’s leading industry: tourism and hospitality.
Over the course of the year, Veligandu Maldives has successfully hosted five immersive sessions under this program. Students from Alif Alif Atoll Education Centre (Rasdhoo) and Thoddoo School were invited to the resort to explore various aspects of resort life and hospitality management through real-life exposure. Beginning with the fourth session, the program expanded its reach through a collaborative effort with the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI), further strengthening its educational impact and industry alignment.
These sessions are carefully crafted to move beyond textbook learning and provide students with a clear view of career possibilities within tourism. Students engaged in interactive experiences across core departments such as Front Office, Housekeeping, and Food & Beverage. Through face-to-face interactions with departmental leaders and motivational talks delivered by resort executives, participants gained valuable insights into customer service excellence, teamwork, and leadership in a real-world setting.
The program also places strong emphasis on sustainability and environmental education. Veligandu’s Chief Engineer led discussions on the resort’s renewable energy initiatives, particularly its solar panel systems, while resident Marine Biologist Sara Sibile delivered engaging sessions on marine conservation and the vital role of the ocean in Maldivian heritage, under the theme “The Ocean: Depths of Wonder.” These efforts reinforce the resort’s broader mission of environmental stewardship and ocean awareness.
Students were also given the opportunity to take part in hands-on activities such as pastry-making sessions led by the resort’s Pastry Chef and hospitality role-plays designed to simulate real-world scenarios. Each session concluded with a guided island tour and a casual networking experience at the resort’s restaurant and snack bar. These carefully planned experiences left lasting impressions on the students, many of whom expressed newfound interest in hospitality careers.
So far, dozens of students, teachers, and even parents have taken part in the program, making it a highlight in Veligandu’s 2025 calendar. The next phase of the program is already set to welcome students from Ukulhas School later this year, further expanding outreach within the atoll and cultivating greater awareness of career pathways in tourism.
While youth education is at the heart of “Discover Tourism,” Veligandu’s CSR efforts span a broader spectrum. The resort prioritizes community empowerment through ongoing initiatives such as sourcing fresh produce and supplies from nearby islands—supporting the local economy and reducing its carbon footprint. It also organizes blood donation drives to contribute to public health and features exclusively Maldivian artists, singers, and DJs during its entertainment nights to celebrate and promote local talent to international guests.
General Manager Fathuhulla Ibrahim emphasized the essence of hospitality in a recent media interaction, stating, “Hospitality isn’t about buildings or menus, it’s about people. It’s about creating meaningful experiences that stay with guests long after they leave. When your team is happy, that energy naturally reaches the guest. That’s the true art of hospitality.”
With its clear vision of responsible tourism, Veligandu Maldives is setting a powerful example of how luxury resorts can give back—by educating the next generation, supporting local communities, and championing sustainability. Each initiative is a step forward in ensuring the resort remains not only a world-class destination for travelers, but also a positive force in the lives of the people and environment that surround it
