A growing number of American travelers are making the Maldives their destination of choice, with recent figures from the Ministry of Tourism and Environment confirming the United States as the seventh-largest contributor to tourist arrivals this year. As of October 21, a total of 51,021 U.S. visitors had arrived in the island nation, representing 2.9% of the total tourist arrivals and highlighting a notable uptick in interest from North America.

The Maldives’ tourism sector continues to demonstrate impressive momentum, recording a 10% rise in overall visitor numbers compared to the same period in the previous year. The country welcomed 1,763,319 international tourists by late October, steadily advancing toward the government’s ambitious goal of 2.3 million arrivals in 2025. With a daily average exceeding 6,000 tourist arrivals, projections indicate that this target remains within reach as the year progresses.

The top five source markets remain anchored by strong Asian and European demand. China leads the chart with 287,274 arrivals, followed by Russia with 216,621 visitors. The United Kingdom has contributed 155,136 travelers, while Germany and Italy follow with 129,477 and 117,614 arrivals, respectively. Together, these countries underscore the Maldives’ established appeal in both regions, even as interest from emerging markets like the United States continues to grow.

In terms of accommodation preferences, the data reinforces the Maldives’ global image as a premier luxury getaway. A significant 73.7% of all international visitors opted for resort stays, reaffirming the enduring appeal of the country’s high-end island resorts. Guesthouses accounted for 21.5% of accommodations, indicating a modest but steady diversification in lodging choices as travelers increasingly explore local island experiences.

These figures not only reflect the Maldives’ continued relevance as a top-tier global destination, but also highlight its ability to attract and retain diverse international markets through its natural beauty, luxury offerings, and consistent service excellence. As the year draws to a close, the nation’s tourism industry stands firmly on track to achieve its annual targets while expanding its global footprint in promising new markets.
