A major highlight for the sporting community in the Maldives unfolded on Friday with the arrival of FIFA President Gianni Infantino, marking a notable return of a FIFA head to the country after nearly two decades. His one-day official visit drew attention not only to the development of football in the island nation but also reaffirmed international support for strengthening governance in local sports institutions.
Infantino’s visit comes 19 years after the last such engagement by a FIFA president, reflecting a renewed focus on fostering football progress in the Maldives. Upon his arrival at Velana International Airport, he was warmly welcomed with a formal reception led by senior Maldivian dignitaries and sports officials. Present at the reception were Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim, Football Association of Maldives (FAM) President Ahmed Thoriq, FIFA’s South Asia Regional Development Manager Prince Rufus, and Sports Commissioner Mohamed Tholal, alongside representatives from the Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation and members of the national football community.
Cultural presentations were part of the ceremonial welcome, showcasing the Maldives’ hospitality and national pride. The visit was made at the official invitation of FAM President Thoriq, who has been actively working to restore trust and professionalism within the association.
During his time in Malé, the 55-year-old Swiss-Italian football leader focused on key areas that are essential for revitalising the sport within the country. His meetings revolved around enhancing FAM’s governance framework, supporting the rehabilitation of financial systems of local clubs, and protecting the rights and career pathways of players. A particular emphasis was placed on creating conditions to retain local football talent within the national ecosystem, an ongoing challenge for smaller football nations.
The FIFA President’s itinerary also included engagements beyond the football governing body. He held discussions with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and met with representatives of several local football clubs, recognising the wider institutional collaboration needed to uplift the sport at grassroots and professional levels.
Infantino, known globally for promoting reforms and transparency in football governance, has consistently advocated for direct engagement with member associations.
