With just weeks left in the year, international tourism in the Maldives is charting a steady course toward another record-breaking high, bolstered by consistent visitor growth from key global markets. Latest statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment affirm the resilience and global appeal of the island nation’s tourism sector, as total tourist arrivals reached 1.7 million by October 15, marking a robust 9.9% increase over the same period in 2024.

One of the most notable developments comes from India, which now stands as the sixth-largest source market for the Maldives. A total of 99,379 Indian tourists have already visited the country so far this year, representing a 4.2% rise compared to the 95,326 arrivals recorded during the same period last year. This consistent upward trend reflects India’s sustained importance as a key market for the Maldivian tourism economy, supported by strong air connectivity, cultural familiarity, and growing outbound travel demand.

China continues to dominate as the top source market, delivering 282,682 visitors year-to-date, reaffirming its position as a central contributor to tourism inflows. Russia follows with 211,263 arrivals, while Italy (155,832), the United Kingdom (151,217), and Germany (124,777) round out the top five.

With the winter high season approaching, traditionally the Maldives’ busiest period, the nation is on track to approach its target of 2.3 million tourists for 2025. Achieving this goal would require attracting approximately 600,000 more visitors before year-end, a feasible outcome given the strong momentum in arrivals and the seasonal influx typically seen from Europe, Asia, and other long-haul markets during the final quarter.

The Maldives’ continued growth underscores its position as one of the world’s most sought-after island destinations, renowned for its pristine beaches, luxurious resorts, and year-round sunshine. As the country intensifies efforts to diversify source markets and expand visitor experiences through cultural and environmental tourism, its appeal remains firmly anchored among global travelers seeking exclusivity, relaxation, and natural beauty.

Tourism remains the largest economic pillar for the Maldives, contributing significantly to employment, foreign exchange earnings, and infrastructure development. The sustained performance across both traditional and emerging markets reinforces the nation’s successful tourism strategy and international partnerships with airlines, tour operators, and digital platforms.

With the year-end approaching, the Maldives remains optimistic, and well-prepared, to welcome hundreds of thousands more travelers in the weeks ahead.
