A spectacular celebration of marine heritage and environmental awareness is set to unfold in the waters of Baa Atoll this October, as preparations are underway for a Guinness World Record attempt that highlights both the Maldives’ natural beauty and its deep-rooted commitment to ocean conservation. Organized by the Baa Atoll Council in partnership with Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), the upcoming event, titled the “Baani Event” aims to set a new world record for the largest simultaneous snorkeling gathering ever held.

Scheduled for 18 October 2025, the event is expected to draw approximately 1,000 participants from across the globe to Villingilifaru Finolhu, a picture-perfect sandbank located just 10 minutes by boat from Eydhafushi, the capital island of Baa Atoll. The selected location offers an idyllic setting, with its expansive turquoise lagoon, coral-rich outer reef, and abundant marine biodiversity. Villingilifaru Finolhu is particularly notable for its thriving underwater ecosystem and its role as a sanctuary for hundreds of Black-naped Terns that nest on its pristine shores, making it a true natural wonder and a fitting stage for this record-breaking initiative.

The Baani Event is more than a large-scale aquatic gathering, it is a celebration of the Maldivian way of life, where the ocean is not only a source of livelihood but also a symbol of cultural identity. The event is designed to promote responsible tourism practices by encouraging participants and spectators alike to experience the underwater world with care and appreciation. By bringing together such a large number of snorkelers in unison, the initiative will draw international attention to the delicate coral reef ecosystems of the Maldives, while inspiring collective action to protect marine habitats under threat from climate change and unsustainable practices.

This large-scale community effort aims to showcase the synergy between tourism and environmental stewardship in the Maldives. It highlights how tourism, when guided by eco-conscious values, can serve as a force for conservation and sustainable development. The Baani Event will stand as a powerful reminder of the nation’s dedication to safeguarding its natural treasures not only for visitors to enjoy today, but for generations to come.

Open registration is currently underway, and interested participants are invited to become a part of this historic moment. Whether joining as a snorkeler or witnessing the event as a supporter, attendees will be treated to an unforgettable experience in one of the Maldives’ most scenic and ecologically vibrant regions. The event also reflects the active role of local councils, communities, and national tourism bodies in creating immersive and meaningful experiences that elevate the Maldives’ global reputation, not only as a luxury travel destination but also as a champion of ocean sustainability and community-led initiatives.

As the Maldives gears up to etch its name into the Guinness World Records once again, the Baani Event promises to be a compelling demonstration of unity, environmental consciousness, and the unparalleled charm of Maldivian marine life.
