To enhance local tourism and make inter-island travel more accessible to international visitors, Maldivian—the national airline of the Maldives, has announced a fare reduction specifically aimed at Free Independent Travelers (FITs). The initiative, part of a broader presidential pledge to strengthen the tourism sector, offers an average fare cut of 15% on existing domestic ticket prices. These newly reduced fares will be available for purchase starting 1st September 2025, with travel commencing from 1st November 2025 onward.
The decision reflects Maldivian’s continued commitment to creating inclusive tourism opportunities that benefit not only international visitors but also local communities. According to Maldivian’s Managing Director, Ibrahim Iyas, the effort aligns with the airline’s long-term vision to decentralize the tourism economy and connect travelers to the vibrant cultural and natural beauty found across the country’s many inhabited islands. “This initiative underscores our commitment to supporting local tourism while delivering greater value for our passengers,” Iyas stated. “As the gateway to the Maldives’ islands, Maldivian takes pride in connecting travellers to the heart of our local communities. By introducing more affordable fares and expanding accessibility, we are helping to spread the benefits of tourism more widely across the country.”
To further strengthen its support for the local tourism ecosystem, Maldivian already offers special corporate rates to local guesthouses and resorts. These partnerships are designed to empower tourism operators outside the capital and major resort hubs, facilitating greater visitor flow into emerging tourism zones across the archipelago. Interested establishments may contact the airline directly via [email protected] for corporate rate inquiries.
Operating the largest and most extensive domestic route network in the Maldives, Maldivian currently connects 17 destinations across the country from the northernmost islands of Haa Alif to the southern reaches of Addu City. This comprehensive coverage allows travelers to explore remote yet spectacular locations, many of which are home to untouched marine biodiversity, pristine beaches, and authentic cultural experiences.
FIT travelers interested in booking tickets at the reduced rates can do so through multiple channels: via the official website www.maldivian.aero, the Maldivian mobile application, email at [email protected], through selected Online Travel Agencies (OTAs), or by contacting one of Maldivian’s Passenger Sales Agents (PSAs).
By lowering barriers to domestic exploration, this fare reduction is expected to stimulate greater tourism movement across the nation, making the Maldives not just a destination for luxury, but a welcoming and accessible paradise for every kind of traveler.
