Austrian Airlines will be expanding its flight operations to the Maldives in early 2026, increasing the frequency of its Vienna–Malé route to daily service during the winter holiday peak. From 20 January to 9 February 2026, the carrier will operate seven flights per week, up from its regular five, using its wide-body Boeing 777-200ER aircraft. The decision aims to meet the high demand for long-haul leisure travel among European holidaymakers seeking warm-weather destinations during the colder months.
As part of the Lufthansa Group, Austrian Airlines is a prominent European full-service airline that has built a consistent seasonal connection to the Maldives. Known for its reliable winter presence, the airline has become a preferred option for Austrian and Central European travellers heading to the Indian Ocean. With Austria’s winter season spanning from November to March, the additional flights cater to a surge in travel demand during school breaks and festive holidays, when European tourists seek tropical getaways.
The Maldives continues to attract travellers from German-speaking countries, including Austria, Germany, and Switzerland with its pristine beaches, private overwater villas, world-class diving spots, and luxury hospitality. Austria alone contributed over 12,000 tourist arrivals in 2023, and demand is projected to rise as travel confidence remains strong. Austrian Airlines’ schedule adjustment reinforces its confidence in the Maldives as a leading leisure destination, where seamless air connectivity plays a vital role in supporting tourism growth.
The airline’s use of the Boeing 777-200ER ensures a comfortable long-haul experience, offering both economy and business class options. The aircraft is well-suited for intercontinental routes, enhancing passenger comfort with spacious cabins and in-flight amenities.
By increasing capacity during this high-demand period, Austrian Airlines not only strengthens its ties with Maldivian tourism stakeholders but also enhances accessibility for European travellers planning their winter escapes. This strategic move aligns with broader efforts by the Maldives to maintain strong international connectivity and cater to growing interest from Europe’s affluent travel market.
