In a continued effort to invest in education and cultivate skilled leadership, Japan has renewed its commitment to the Maldives by funding a prestigious postgraduate scholarship program for Maldivian professionals. The latest agreement, signed between the two countries, ensures full financial support for Maldivian students to pursue master’s degrees at leading institutions in Japan, reinforcing a partnership built on mutual development and human resource empowerment.
The Grant Agreement for the Japan Development Scholarship (JDS) Program 2025–2031 was formally signed by Dr. Ali Haidar Ahmed, Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development, and Mr. Motoo Taki, the Resident Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in the Maldives. This scholarship scheme, which will span the next four years, marks another chapter in the longstanding cooperation between the Maldives and Japan in the field of capacity building and knowledge exchange.
According to the Ministry, the JDS Program plays a vital role in supporting the Maldives’ vision for a more competent and globally aware public sector. The program specifically targets future leaders in the government by equipping them with postgraduate qualifications in areas that are crucial for national development. The current cycle includes six fully funded master’s scholarships, offering academic opportunities in disciplines such as International Relations, Public Policy, and Environmental Sciences.
The Government of Japan has allocated over USD 1.3 million for this initiative, underscoring its commitment to sustainable human capital development in the Maldives. Over the past four years, 24 Maldivian students have benefited from the JDS program, acquiring master’s degrees that have enhanced their contributions to public service and policymaking upon returning to the Maldives.
