Demonstrating exceptional determination and talent on the international stage, 13-year-old Maldivian taekwondo athlete, Yunus bin Mohamed Quraishi, secured third place at the highly competitive Hana Open Taekwondo Championship, currently being held in Malaysia.
The Hana Open is widely regarded as the largest club-level taekwondo tournament in Malaysia, drawing nearly 2,000 participants from across the country and neighboring regions. It serves as a critical platform for young athletes to showcase their skill, athleticism, and competitive spirit. This year’s championship featured a strong lineup of contenders, with events spanning multiple age groups and weight categories.
Representing the Maldives, Yunus competed in the 12 to 14-year-old male category, a division that included 18 skilled athletes vying for top honors. Displaying advanced technique and disciplined training, Yunus fought through three consecutive victories to secure a place in the semi-finals. His remarkable run included wins over athletes from leading Malaysian clubs, reinforcing his position as a promising talent in the regional taekwondo scene.
In the semi-final match, Yunus sustained a shoulder injury but continued to compete with remarkable resilience. He managed to win the first round of the bout despite the injury, earning admiration from spectators and coaches alike. However, due to the physical limitation imposed by the injury, he was unable to sustain his performance in the subsequent rounds and concluded the competition in third place.
This achievement adds to Yunus’s growing list of accolades. In July 2023, he clinched a gold medal at the Intra Club Kirgi Taekwondo Championship held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. His performance there demonstrated the same commitment and skill that he brought to Malaysia, reflecting his consistent progress and competitive mindset.
Yunus’s success is a proud moment for the Maldives, and highlights the growing presence of Maldivian youth in international sports. It also underscores the increasing importance of sports tourism and international athletic exchanges for small island nations. With continued support and investment in youth sports, athletes like Yunus can inspire more young Maldivians to participate in global events and represent the country with pride.
