Progress continues in strengthening the Maldivian healthcare infrastructure as the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure officially enters the design phase for the China-Maldives Friendship Hospital in Vilimale’. The initiative follows the signing of a Letter of Exchange between Minister Abdulla Muthalib and Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, H.E. Kong Xianhua, on Wednesday, representing a new milestone in bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

The upcoming 112-bed tertiary hospital is a fully grant-funded project by the Government of China, reflecting the long-standing development partnership between China and the Maldives. The project has now moved into its technical design phase following the successful completion of a feasibility study earlier this year. The Letter of Exchange formalizes the next steps toward the realization of a state-of-the-art health facility, which is expected to significantly improve healthcare delivery for residents of Vilimale’.

The hospital was first announced in January 2024 during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s official state visit to China. It was during this visit that the Chinese government reaffirmed its commitment to fully fund the construction of the new hospital as part of broader development cooperation between the two nations.

Subsequently, in March 2025, the Maldivian government allocated a plot of land in Vilimale’ for the construction of the facility. The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure confirmed that construction work is expected to commence following the completion of detailed technical and architectural plans, which are now underway.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has consistently underscored the importance of expanding access to quality healthcare as a central pillar of his administration. He has highlighted that the development of this hospital will alleviate the burden on residents who currently need to travel to Malé City for most medical services, thus enhancing equitable healthcare access across the Greater Malé Region.

The Vilimale’ Friendship Hospital is a reflection of President Muizzu’s clear vision to decentralize and strengthen the Maldivian health sector, aligning with his broader presidential pledges to elevate national healthcare standards. Under his leadership, the government continues to prioritize projects that bring essential services closer to communities and reduce pressure on existing urban health infrastructure.

As the project transitions into the design phase, it marks another step forward in delivering on the government’s commitment to accessible and modern healthcare for all Maldivians, a commitment further reinforced through productive international partnerships.
