A renewed focus on neutrality and national interest has strengthened the Maldives’ international relationships, thanks to a clear and consistent foreign policy direction championed by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. Since taking office, the President has emphasized a “Maldives First” approach, rooted in the country’s Constitution, placing the well-being of the Maldivian people and the sovereignty of the nation above all else.

In an exclusive interview with PSM News, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel highlighted the success of the current Administration’s foreign policy in cultivating stronger bilateral and multilateral ties. He credited this success to the firm, principled approach taken by President Dr Muizzu, who has drawn a clear red line when it comes to preserving the Maldives’ independence and territorial integrity.

According to Minister Khaleel, the international community has welcomed this independent stance, with global partners responding positively to the Maldives’ shift towards a neutral, balanced diplomatic posture. “Every country will put its own interests and the interests of its people first. It will be ensured even if it is not written,” Dr Khaleel stated. “The result of us standing firm in this way is that other countries understand the sincerity of our foreign policy.”

The Maldives’ approach to foreign affairs under President Muizzu has centered on fairness, mutual respect, and equality, regardless of the size or power of the counterpart. This approach has not only opened more opportunities for development cooperation but also strengthened Maldives’ voice on the global stage.

Dr Khaleel reiterated that despite regional geopolitical dynamics, the Maldives remains committed to engaging constructively with all partners. He emphasized that both India and China are viewed as essential development allies, and the Maldives is committed to working with both on an equal footing.

President Dr Muizzu’s foreign policy reflects his broader vision to position the Maldives as a sovereign, respected nation that fosters peace, cooperation, and sustainable growth through balanced international engagement. This policy direction is also in line with his presidential pledges to prioritize the nation’s autonomy while deepening mutually beneficial ties with the global community.

The current Administration’s principled diplomacy, centered on neutrality, has earned international respect and paved the way for stronger partnerships, solidifying the Maldives’ role as a cooperative and dependable member of the global community. For visitors and investors alike, this translates into a more stable, welcoming, and forward-looking destination in the heart of the Indian Ocean.
