During his visit to Dushanbe for the High-Level International Conference on the Preservation of Glaciers, His Excellency Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef attended a formal reception hosted by the Government of Tajikistan. The event, held in honour of the international delegates participating in the conference, served as a platform for regional and global leaders to exchange insights on the growing climate crisis and the urgent need for collective environmental action.
At the reception, the Vice President engaged with senior representatives and high-ranking officials from several countries. Discussions centred around the critical challenges posed by glacier retreat, a direct consequence of global warming that not only affects freshwater resources but also exacerbates rising sea levels a threat with dire implications for low-lying nations like the Maldives.
Earlier in the day, Vice President Latheef had delivered a strong appeal during the opening session of the conference, calling for immediate and unified global efforts to combat glacier loss. He reiterated the Maldives’ concern about the accelerating pace of melting glaciers and highlighted the far-reaching impacts on ocean levels, climate patterns, and sustainable development. His speech emphasized the Maldives’ commitment to international cooperation and climate resilience, reaffirming the country’s environmental priorities on a global stage.
In addition to the reception, the Vice President also paid a courtesy call on His Excellency Kokhir Rasulzoda, Prime Minister of Tajikistan, where the two leaders discussed bilateral cooperation in climate adaptation, agriculture, and tourism development.
The Vice President’s participation in this series of high-level engagements underscores the Maldives’ active role in climate diplomacy and global environmental advocacy. His presence at the conference and related events not only reaffirms the Maldives’ environmental leadership but also reflects its readiness to collaborate with other nations on shared challenges, especially those that resonate with eco-conscious travellers and global citizens.
