His Excellency Santosh S. Lad, Labour Minister of the Government of Karnataka, Republic of India, paid a courtesy call on His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at the President’s Office, reflecting the enduring partnership between the Maldives and one of India’s most economically dynamic states.
During the meeting, both sides reaffirmed the deep-rooted friendship and cooperation that have long defined Maldives–India relations. President Muizzu acknowledged India’s pivotal role as a reliable partner in the Maldives’ ongoing development efforts and placed special emphasis on the strong people-to-people ties between the Maldives and Karnataka. He remarked that Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, has become a second home for many Maldivians, especially those pursuing higher education and advanced healthcare.
The President also highlighted the importance of continued collaboration between the two nations, particularly through regional cooperation with states like Karnataka, which have made substantial advancements in education, technology, and economic innovation. Minister Santosh S. Lad expressed appreciation for the warm ties between the Maldives and India, and conveyed his government’s willingness to deepen cooperation across labour mobility, training, and skills development—areas that directly benefit both nations.
The discussion also touched on the recent establishment of the Maldives International Financial Centre (MIFC), an ambitious economic initiative designed to diversify the Maldivian economy and attract global investment. Both leaders expressed optimism that the MIFC would open new avenues for cooperation between Maldivian institutions and Indian financial and professional sectors, particularly those based in Bengaluru, a major tech and financial hub in South Asia.
As the meeting concluded, President Muizzu and Minister Santosh Lad reaffirmed their shared interest in enhancing economic collaboration, supporting human capital development, and expanding regional connectivity. The visit highlighted not only the importance of national-level diplomacy but also the growing relevance of subnational partnerships in shaping 21st-century international relations.
With close historical ties, economic interdependence, and shared regional aspirations, the Maldives and India, especially its southern states, are well positioned to strengthen their partnership in ways that benefit both their citizens and the broader region.
