Maldives is set to redefine air travel experiences with the development of a state-of-the-art terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA). President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu recently toured the construction site, where he was briefed on the project’s progress by senior officials from Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and the contractor, Saudi Binladin Group. The new terminal is poised to accommodate over seven million passengers annually, a significant upgrade from the current terminal’s 1.5 million passenger capacity.

As one of the world’s most sought-after travel destinations, the Maldives welcomed over two million tourists last year, surpassing the existing terminal’s capabilities. The expansion aims to address this challenge, ensuring seamless passenger flow and enhanced airport services. Encompassing 78,000 square meters, the new terminal will feature cutting-edge facilities such as passenger boarding bridges, an advanced baggage handling system, and expanded retail and dining options. Additionally, the development includes modern lounges and improved passenger amenities, aligning with the country’s vision to enhance the overall travel experience.

The Maldives government has placed significant emphasis on expanding its air transport infrastructure to support both tourism and domestic connectivity. Recognizing the geographical dispersion of its islands, the administration is prioritizing improved accessibility through advancements in aviation. The national carrier, Maldivian, has already introduced its first wide-body aircraft, with plans to further expand its international routes and fleet.

With plans to commence operations by October this year, the new terminal is expected to be a game-changer for the country’s aviation sector. It will not only ease congestion at VIA but also bolster the nation’s economy by facilitating increased tourist arrivals and strengthening the Maldives’ position as a premier global travel destination.
