Maldivian Airlines Extends Deadline for Second Wide-Body Aircraft Proposal

Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, is taking a significant step towards expanding its international operations by acquiring a second Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft. This move aligns with the government’s vision to enhance the country’s air connectivity and attract more long-haul travelers, further solidifying the Maldives as a world-class tourism destination.
The airline recently extended the deadline for interested parties to submit proposals to lease the Airbus A330 for a five-year period. The new deadline for proposal submissions is set for March 14, 2025, 23:59hrs providing additional time for bidders to participate in this expansion plan.
Maldivian’s fleet upgrade began earlier this year with the successful introduction of its first Airbus A330 on January 6, 2025. The wide-body aircraft has already started operating direct flights to major Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu, catering to the growing demand from the Chinese market. With plans underway to acquire a second A330, Maldivian is now setting its sights on launching direct flights to European destinations, further strengthening its international presence.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized the importance of expanding direct flight routes as part of his administration’s key pledges to boost tourism and improve air accessibility. The government aims to commence direct flights to Europe by October 2025, a move expected to enhance the Maldives’ appeal among European travelers and increase tourist arrivals from long-haul markets.
