Chairman of the Senate of Pakistan, His Excellency Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani, has paid a courtesy call on His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during the President’s State Visit to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, with discussions centred on further strengthening the longstanding friendship and expanding cooperation between the two countries.
The meeting formed part of President Dr Muizzu’s high-level engagements in Pakistan and provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on strengthening the close relationship between the Maldives and Pakistan. Discussions focused particularly on identifying new avenues of cooperation that could deliver greater benefits to both countries and their peoples.
President Dr Muizzu and Senate Chairman Gillani reflected on the strong ties that have developed between the Maldives and Pakistan over the decades, built on mutual respect, shared values and close people-to-people relations. The discussions highlighted the importance of maintaining regular engagement at the highest levels while broadening cooperation in areas of common interest.
The courtesy call also underscored the role of parliamentary engagement in complementing relations between the two governments. Greater interaction between institutions of the Maldives and Pakistan provides opportunities for the exchange of knowledge, experience and expertise while strengthening understanding between the two countries.
President Dr Muizzu’s State Visit comes as the Maldives and Pakistan mark 60 years of diplomatic relations, giving added significance to the series of high-level discussions taking place during the visit. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were formally established in 1966, and the relationship has since developed across a wide range of areas.
The Government of President Dr Muizzu has placed strong emphasis on expanding the Maldives’ international partnerships and strengthening relationships with friendly nations through practical cooperation that contributes to national development. The engagements in Pakistan reflect this approach, with both countries exploring opportunities to build stronger economic, institutional and people-to-people connections.
