The Maldives has once again been nominated for the prestigious title of World’s Leading Destination at the World Travel Awards 2026, reinforcing the island nation’s position among the most admired and competitive tourism destinations in the international travel industry.

The nomination marks the seventh time the Maldives has been recognised in the category, following an exceptional record of winning the World’s Leading Destination title for six consecutive years. The country first secured the award in 2020 and has retained the distinction every year since, highlighting the sustained global appeal of the Maldives and the strength of its tourism sector.

Voting for the 2026 World’s Leading Destination award is currently open and will continue until 30 October. The nomination places the Maldives once again among the leading destinations competing for one of the highest recognitions in global tourism.

Renowned for its pristine islands, turquoise lagoons, white-sand beaches and distinctive one-island-one-resort concept, the Maldives has developed a tourism offering recognised worldwide for privacy, natural beauty, high-quality hospitality and memorable island experiences. Its resort sector continues to evolve through new investments, premium accommodation, innovative dining, marine experiences, wellness facilities, family-focused services and environmentally responsible tourism initiatives.

The continued international recognition also reflects the Government’s efforts to strengthen the tourism industry, expand connectivity, encourage investment and promote the Maldives across key and emerging global markets. Tourism remains a central pillar of the Maldivian economy, with resorts, guesthouses, hotels and other tourism businesses contributing significantly to employment, investment and national development.

Established in 1993, the World Travel Awards recognises excellence across the global travel, tourism and hospitality industries and is widely regarded as one of the sector’s most prominent international awards programmes.

In addition to its repeated success as the World’s Leading Destination, the Maldives has secured numerous global and regional accolades at the World Travel Awards over the years, with Maldivian resorts, tourism businesses and hospitality brands frequently recognised across a wide range of categories.

A seventh consecutive victory would further strengthen the Maldives’ reputation as one of the world’s most desirable holiday destinations and underline the country’s continued success in delivering exceptional tourism experiences to travellers from around the globe.
