The Government is progressing with 1,273 development projects across the Maldives, with financial arrangements being made to ensure timely payments and continued implementation of priority works, Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises Hassan Zareer has said.

Speaking during the Government’s Ahaa public forum, Minister Zareer said the administration is closely monitoring projects underway across the country and working to resolve challenges that have affected the pace of implementation. His remarks came in response to a question from a resident of Velidhoo regarding projects on the island that had experienced delays.

According to the Minister, one of the main challenges facing ongoing construction projects has been difficulty in obtaining essential materials, particularly due to disruptions linked to the continuing conflict in the Middle East. Despite these external pressures, he said the Government is making the necessary financial arrangements to advance projects according to their level of priority.

Minister Zareer said work is currently underway on 1,273 projects nationwide and that arrangements have been made to facilitate payments associated with the projects. He added that the Government remains committed to securing funding and progressing development initiatives on every inhabited island in accordance with established priorities.

The nationwide development programme forms part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s broader vision to strengthen essential infrastructure, public services and community facilities throughout the Maldives. Under the Government’s plans, water and sewerage systems, waste management facilities, fitness and recreation centres are targeted for completion and opening across all islands by Independence Day in 2028.

The development agenda also includes outdoor gyms, children’s parks and ATM services, while dedicated police facilities and laboratory services are planned for islands across the country. Improving healthcare services, strengthening school infrastructure and expanding access to inclusive education are also among the Government’s key priorities.

Religious facilities, sports infrastructure and transport-related projects are similarly included in the national development programme, reflecting the administration’s objective of improving access to essential services and creating stronger community infrastructure throughout the atolls.

President Muizzu has said the implementation of these projects will play an important role in advancing the Maldives towards its long-term national objective of becoming a developed nation by 2040. The Government’s continued focus on securing financing, addressing implementation challenges and prioritising projects across the islands is expected to support more balanced development and improved public services across the country.
