The Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments and Ooredoo Maldives Public Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in the maintenance, renovation and improvement of mosques across the Maldives through Ooredoo Maldives’ Masjidhuna Project.
The agreement was signed at Ooredoo Maldives’ headquarters in Hulhumalé by Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments H.E. Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, on behalf of the Ministry, and Mr. Shadi Qawasmi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ooredoo Maldives Public Limited, on behalf of the company.
The MoU establishes a framework for the Ministry and Ooredoo Maldives to coordinate mosque renovation, maintenance, infrastructure improvements and related development activities across the country. The collaboration is intended to ensure that mosque facilities remain well maintained and provide comfortable, accessible and welcoming environments for worshippers.
Implemented as part of Ooredoo Maldives’ Corporate Social Responsibility programme, the Masjidhuna Project will support communities by addressing essential maintenance and improvement requirements at selected mosques. Particular attention will be given to preparing mosque facilities ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, when mosques across the country experience increased attendance for daily prayers, congregational worship and other religious activities.
Through the initiative, Ooredoo Maldives aims to support the renovation of five mosques annually across different regions of the Maldives, with improvement works scheduled for completion ahead of Ramadan each year. The works are expected to focus on practical maintenance and facility improvements that enhance the condition, functionality and overall environment of the selected mosques.
The initiative complements the Government’s continuing efforts to improve Islamic infrastructure and strengthen religious services for communities throughout the archipelago. With the Maldives consisting of widely dispersed island communities, maintaining mosque infrastructure remains an important part of ensuring that residents have suitable facilities for worship close to their homes.
The partnership also reflects the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments’ emphasis on expanding cooperation with the private sector to support national priorities in mosque development and maintenance. Such partnerships provide an additional avenue for businesses to contribute directly to community development while supporting the preservation and improvement of important religious facilities.
The Masjidhuna Project further demonstrates the role that corporate social responsibility can play in supporting public and community infrastructure. Through sustained cooperation between the Government and Ooredoo Maldives, the programme is expected to contribute to the long-term upkeep of mosques and improve facilities for worshippers in communities across the Maldives.
