Maldivian authorities have highlighted the importance of understanding the separate requirements relating to the depositing and conversion of foreign currency under the Foreign Currency Act, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen regulatory compliance and promote greater clarity within the country’s foreign exchange framework.
Under the Foreign Currency Act, depositing foreign currency and converting foreign currency are two distinct legal obligations. Businesses and other parties subject to the legislation are therefore required to understand and comply with each requirement independently, rather than treating them as a single obligation.
The clarification is expected to support businesses in accurately fulfilling their responsibilities under the law while contributing to a more transparent, accountable and well-regulated foreign currency environment in the Maldives. Clear understanding of the distinction is particularly important for sectors and businesses that regularly receive or handle foreign currency as part of their operations.
The Government continues to place emphasis on improving awareness of regulatory requirements and ensuring that businesses are provided with clear information to support effective compliance. Strengthening understanding of the Foreign Currency Act also contributes to the broader objective of maintaining an orderly foreign exchange system and supporting the stability and sustainability of the Maldivian economy.
Authorities have also released an explanatory video outlining the difference between the two obligations and providing further guidance on the requirements applicable to depositing and converting foreign currency. Businesses and relevant stakeholders are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the information to ensure that their operations remain fully compliant with the Foreign Currency Act.
