The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has strengthened its engagement in sustainable and inclusive finance through participation in an Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI) Peer Learning Exchange in Fiji, where representatives studied the Reserve Bank of Fiji’s experience in advancing Inclusive Green Finance.

The exchange provided an important platform for the MMA to gain practical insights into how climate-related considerations can be integrated into financial sector policies while supporting broader national development objectives. Discussions focused on climate risk management, the implementation of green taxonomies, and approaches to incorporating climate considerations into financial inclusion frameworks.

Participants also examined initiatives aimed at improving financial resilience and expanding access to finance for vulnerable communities and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. These areas are particularly relevant to island economies such as the Maldives, where climate exposure and the need for sustainable economic development remain closely connected.

The programme further highlighted how financial institutions and regulators can support responsible investment, strengthen resilience to climate-related risks and encourage financing for environmentally sustainable economic activities. Such international knowledge exchanges provide the Maldives with valuable opportunities to draw on proven policy experience while adapting relevant approaches to the country’s own financial and economic priorities.

The MMA’s participation reflects the Government of Maldives’ broader commitment to strengthening a resilient, inclusive and sustainable financial system that can support businesses, communities and long-term national development. Continued cooperation with international partners and peer institutions is expected to contribute to stronger policy frameworks and greater access to sustainable financial opportunities across the Maldives.

Peer learning and knowledge sharing remain important components in developing financial systems that are inclusive, resilient and responsive to emerging global challenges, particularly for small island developing states.
